Perhaps it is the first time for you to visit Henan, so I’d like to give you a brief introduction about it! Henan province, also called “Yu” for short, meaning a man pulling an elephant, is situated right in the heart of China, covering an area of 167,000 square kilometers, with a total population of 97 million, which is the largest of all provinces in China. Henan is also named “central plain” or “Central State”, for over 4,000 years ago, China was divided into nine state. Henan was called Yu State, and was located in the middle of the nine state, hence the name. And you must heard Luoyang, a city which has a long history. Luoyang is located at the western part of Henan Province. It stretches over both the south and north banks of the central reaches of the Yellow River. As the city is also situated on the northern bank of the Luohe River and faces the sun, hence the name, Luoyang. Luoyang is famous for being ancient capitals of 9 dynasties. During the time of serving as capitals, Luoyang was always the center of China’s politics, economy and culture. Lots of historical events of great importance took place here. It is also one of the excellent tourists cities in China and now is striving for the title of the best tourist city in our country. Luoyang is a city, not only rich in natural landscape but also abundant in man-made scenery. Today, I’d like to show you one of the famous natural landscapes in the region -- Yellow River Dam Project Scenic Area at Xiaolangdi. I’m sure you’ll love it. So, now please take your valuable things along with you and get ready to get off the bus. Dear friends, we have now entered the largest heavenly-created fairyland on water—the Thousand-Island Lake of Xiaolangdi on the Yellow River. Looking eastward, the dyke we see is the Xiaolangdi Main Dam, named after Xiaolangdi village of Mengjin Country where it is built. The Yellow River Dam Project Scenic Area at Xiaolangdi at the mouth of the last gorge of the middle reaches of the Yellow River some 40 kilometers to the north of Luoyang city, Henan Province. As the largest water-control project on the Yellow River, Xiaolangdi is able to play an important role not only in flood control, ice prevention, silt reduction, irrigation, water supply and electric power generation in Henan Province and even in the whole region of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, but also in providing a new tourist attraction for tourists both at home and abroad. The dam is 1317 meters long and 281 meters in height, stretching from Xiao Mountain in south, to Wangwu Mountain in north. It is the biggest soil-based dam built on the rivers of our country and is able to control the flood occurred once every thousand years. Not only can the quantity of water supply be increased by 40 billion stere, but also industrial and agricultural production and people’s daily water supply condition along the Yellow River banks can be improved a lot. Protected anti-drought area can reach 25 million Mu; 2.1 million tons of coal can be saved in generating electricity yearly. It is a super-huge type multi-purpose water-control project built by means of international bidding, partly with the loan from the World Bank. The three principle parts, namely, the dam, the flood and sand discharge system, and the electricity generating system, of the project were respectively constructed and fixed by some Italian, German and French experts, who brought us advanced technology in construction and referencable experience in management. According to the Zhengzhou-Luoyang center tourism route set up by the central government of China, the Xiaolangdi Beauty Spot on the Yellow River is divided into four grand areas, which are Xiaolangdi Dam, Zijin Mountain, Eight-li Gorge and Sanmen Gorge. There are 13 sightseeing districts and 113 scenic spots. Each spot has its own historical stories; therefore, we can appreciate the scenic glamour of large mountains with lakes, gorges and rivers featured by the middle-lower reaches of the Yellow River Project. Next, we are going to reach the Yellow River Eight-li Gorge, which is regarded as the “last gorge on the Yellow River ”. The gorge is named this because of its eight-li length. It is the last gorge at the joint point of the middle and the lower reaches of the 5,464-kilometer-long Yellow River. Tall mountains stand high on both the south and the north side of the gorge, with steep cliffs and steady flowing water, peaceful and mild. It was said that there are eight scenic spots within eight li in ancient times. According to “Mountain and Ocean Classics” , the story about this gorge goes like this: ”Emperor Yu’s father was killed by Shun after nine years harnessing floods without success. But his father’s will to harness the Yellow River never died, and he turned into Danzhu Island to help his son Yu to control the flood finally. OK, so much for my explanation.
