Title: Unit 4 Earthquake

Teaching content: Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading
Teaching objectives:
By the end of the class, students will be able to
1. read, listen and recognize the following words: as if, in ruins, injure, destroy, shock, trap, burst, rescue, suffer, dig out
2. Use the reading skill—skimming and scanning,to finish the task
3. Master basic knowledge about the cause of earthquake
4. Know some tips to protect themselves in the earthquake.
Important points:
1. The understanding of the following phrases: as if, in ruins, dig out
2. The main idea of each part :finding the topic sentence and then sum up

1. Warming up(7min)
Free talk and watch a video
T has a free talk with ss,“What date is it today”……and “what do you know about May 12th?”
Ss are required to answer the question,“What happened in Wenchuan?”after watching a video on Wenchuan earthquake(5.12).
(T elicits from ss’ answer, and writes the new words on the blackboard: burst, destroy, trap,injure)
2. Pre-reading(3min)
Questions:
(1)Image your home begins to shake and you must leave it right away. You have time to take only one thing. What will you take? Why?
(2)What do you think will happen before an earthquake?(Mice…Fish….Chickens….People)
3. While-reading(32min)
(1) Reading& Judge
SS is required to skim the article and finish the exercise with T/F.(The first reading)
A. People in TangShan were warmed of the eq and did not go to bed that night.( )

Part1 (para1): Before the earthquake, strange things began to happen but no one took any notice of them.(T reminds ss to find out the topic sentence and then sum up the main idea.)
Topic sentence: Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei.
Part2(para2-3):The earthquake destroyed the city of TangShan and shocked the people very much.
Topic sentence: It seemed as if the world was at an end!
Part3(para4):The army came to help the survivors, bringing hope for a new life
Topic sentence: All hope was not lost.
