1/7 Drilling holes using a 32 mm system Description The industry sets standards: rows of holes are always drilled with a spacing of 32 mm and a bore diameter of 5 mm or 3 mm. For this hole spacing – also designated as the bore hole grid spacing – various fittings and parts are offered on the market. Some examples: For doors and bodies of cabinets, chests of drawers and shelves • For attaching perpendicular panels with cup hinges • For screwing in metal rails for drawers • For screwing in eccentric connector fittings • For attaching flap holders • For positioning false floors • For mounting fittings • Using the LR 32 hole drilling system for the OF 1010 and OF 1400 routers, rows of holes can be drilled quickly, precisely and easily. Festool offers an expanded hole drilling set – the LR 32-SYS in a Systainer. It contains all the necessary parts, tidily stored and ready to use (1 – 4, Order No. 583291). 3/7 104/04 104/05 1 2 104/03 C Preparation/Set-up Note: The Festool hole drilling system is arranged so that holes are drilled near the guide rail.Only bolts for the LR 32 guide plate fit in the holes of the guide rail. Attaching guide plate LR 32: The guide plate must firstly be adjusted to the guide rail so that there is no free play. Lay the guide plate on the guide rail so that the indexing bolt locks in • place in the guide rail under the black rocker. Install both clamping screws for the guide jaws so that the guide plate can be moved right or left and does not bind after the rocker has been pressed. Connecting the router with guide plate: Insert the centring mandrel in the clamping collet of the router. • This serves to centre the router on the guide plate. Place the router on the guide plate and centre it by pressing the centring • disc into the hole of the guide plate (Arrow 1). Clamp the router to the guide plate using the knob (Arrow 2). • Remove the centring mandrel and insert the D 5 mm dowel drill bit. • 4/7 104/09 1 104/07 2 1 3 104/08 4 5 104/06 Adjusting the side fences: Before initial use, the side fences must be adjusted. First set the stop flag on 0 using the scale. • Then the entire stop is set on the guide rail and the connection from • the scale bar and the clamping block is opened with an Allen key (1). The unit is now moved until the indexing bolt (2) of the stop flag is • centred in the recess of the guide plate (3). Figure 104/08 (4) shows the unit centred in the guide plate. • Now the connection from the scale bar and clamping block (5) is again • clamped using the Allen key. This procedure is also to be followed with the second side fence. • This adjustment is to be performed very precisely since the centre distance of the row of holes to the edges of the body is set with these scale values. Longitudinal stop A longitudinal stop is installed (1) on both ends of the guide rail. The stop is to be installed so that the number "32" faces upwards. • The value "32“ indicates the distance the first hole should be drilled • from the workpiece edge. 5/7 104/10 1 2 3 104/11 104/12 104/13 Procedure 1. Drilling the front row of holes for overlying doors using the System 32. Set the stop flag of the side fence to precisely 37 mm. • Mount the side fence on the guide rail. • Lay the guide rail and top longitudinal stop on the top edge of the body. • The top edge is then also the reference edge for the 2nd series of holes (1). Slide the guide rail until the stop pin is at the front edge of the board (2). • View from below No. 1 = longitudinal stop No. 2 = stop pin from side fence No. 3 = Festool clamp FSZ for the guide rail If possible, always clamp the guide rail so that is secure against slipping with two FSZ clamps on the workpiece. Place router with guide plate on the guide rail. • The bolt on the underside of the guide plate must engage in the first hole • of the hole rail. Set desired drilling depth. • Set motor speed to 6. • The router is now ready to operate. • The guide plate bolt must always engage one of the holes in the guide rail. It is moved up by pressing on the lever arm. After drilling each hole, press the lever arm, move the router – • by releasing the lever arm – until the bolt engages in the next hole. Drill the front row of holes. • D 6/7 104/14 104/16 104/15 Distan ce X 104/17 Door There is a recess in the guide plate with a marking in the centre. On the guide rail (Fig. 104/14), you can mark the start and end position of each hole series with a pencil or non-permanent felt tip marker. Groups of holes can also be marked in this way. 2. Drilling the back row of holes Example: Metal drawer runners are to be attached to cabinet sides. Then the position of the back row of holes adjusts to the holes of the rails being used. Set the stop flag of the side fence to distance X. • The guide rail is to again be placed with the longitudinal stop at the top • edge (reference edge) of the body. Now drill all the holes necessary for the back rows. • If several workpieces of the same size are drilled, all the back rows of holes are then to be drilled with the same settings. 3. Drilling cup hinges in the door front A hinge location cutter is required for drilling in the door front. 35 mm holes are provided for this purpose in most cases. Firstly, place the hinge location cutter that matches the mounting into • the router. Set the speed to 1 – 2. • Rotate the longitudinal stop by 180° (as indicated in Fig. 104/09). • The number "16“ will now be seen on top. Lay the door front beside the side of the cabinet to which the doors are to • be attached. 7/7 104/19 104/20 104/18 Marks for holes Mark the centres of the cup hinges where they are to be drilled. • Set the stop flag for the side fence to the required hole size for the • hinge (for 35 mm fittings, e. g., 21.5 mm). Now place the guide rail on the inner surface of the door and fit it to the • door top edge (reference edge). The side fences are fitted to the edge where the holes for the hinges are • to be drilled. Clamp the guide rail for the hole series on the workpiece using the • clamps. Place the router with the guide plate at the location where the first hole • is to be drilled. The bolt must engage. Set the drilling depth according to the hinge manufacturer's instructions. Drill the first hole. • Move the router to the next position and drill the second hole. • Our example for use is a recommendation tried and tested in practice.
