完形填空专项练习 1 Anthropology is a science which deals with man and his social habits. I think of anthropology here as “being interested, without 1, in the way other people choose to live and 2.” —When you are curious about the way someone behaves or the way 3 feel about something, it’s 4 that you will be annoyed(恼火). When someone acts in a way that seems 5 to you, rather than react in your usual way, such as “I can't believe they would do that,” 6 say something to yourself like “I see, that must be the way they 7 things in their world. Very interesting.” In order for this 8 to help you, you have to be genuine (真诚的). Recently I was at a shopping mall with my six-year old daughter 9 a group of punk rockers walked by with orange spiked hair and tattoos (纹身) covering much of their bodies. At the sight of them, my daughter immediately asked me, “Daddy, why are they 10 like that?” Years ago I would have felt very 11 with such young people. I would have given a judgmental explanation and passed along to her my 12. Pretending to be an anthropolgist, however, has 13 my perspective (看法) a great deal, so it’s made me 14 .I said to my daughter, “I’m not really sure, but it’s interesting how 15 we all are, isn’t it?” She said, “Yeah, 16 I like my own hair.” When you are interested in other perspectives, it doesn’t mean you’re 17 them. I certainly wouldn’t choose a punk rock lifestyle or 18 it to anyone else. At the same time, however, it’s really not my 19 to judge it either. One of the most important rules of joyful living is that judging others takes a great deal of energy and 20 you away from where you want to be. 1. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to and 2 other people as equals. A down-to-earth person is just the 3 of someone who acts important and proud. Down-to-earth persons 4 be important members of society, of course. 5 they do not let their importance “go to their heads”. They do not 6 themselves to be better persons than others of less importance. Someone who is filled with his own importance and pride, often without cause, is 7 to have “his nose in the air”. There is 8 way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth. Americans 9 another expression that means almost the same as “down-to-earth”. The expression is “both-feet-on-the-ground”. Someone with both-feet-on-the-ground is a person with a good 10 of reality. He 11 what is called “common sense”. He may have 12 , but he does not allow them to 13 his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of 14 is one who has his “head-in-the-clouds”. A man with his-head-in-the-clouds is a dreamer whose 15 is not in the real world. 16 , such a dreamer can be brought back to earth. 17 words from a teacher can usually bring a day-dreaming student down-to-earth. Usually, the person who is down-to-earth is very 18 to have both feet on-the –ground. 19 we have both our feet on-the –ground, when we are down-to-earth, we act honestly and openly 20 others. Our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong. 1.A.pleasant B.sad C.common D.surprising 2.A.meets B.welcomes C.receives D.accepts 3.A.case B.kind C.opposite D.example 4.A.must B.may C.should D.will 5.A.But B.So C.For D.And 6.A.wish B.expect C.desire D.consider 7.A.said B.told C.asked D.made 8.A.some B.a C.no D.every 9.A.discover B.find C.make D.use 10.A.understanding B.wish C.reason D.expectation 11.A.demands B.lacks C.has D.likes 12.A.fortunes B.dreams C.achievements D.disadvantages 13.A.block B.protect C.own D.gain 14.A.idea B.people C.attitude D.person 15.A.mind B.life C.body D.head 16.A.Always B.Therefore C.However D.Sometimes 17.A.Sharp B.All C.No D.Bad 18.A.possible B.probable C.likely D.able 19.A.Though B.Since C.When D.Unless 20.A.toward B.for C.over D.onto 3 The ship first appeared as a small point on the horizon (地平线).We had grown 1 at the delay and cheered when we saw it . As the ship came into the harbour , everybody 14 eagerly at the troops lined along the railings(栏杆). Soldiers 15 waved to us wildly , shouting out the names of people they 16 or wanted to see . They were 1 to show that we all have “a body clock” 2 us, which controls the 3 and fall of our body energies, 4 us different from one day to the next. The 5 of “a body clock” should not be too 6 since the lives of most living things are controlled 7 the 24 hour night-and-day cycle. We feel 8 and fall asleep at night and become 9 and energetic during the day. If the 24 hour-cycle is 10 , most people experience unpleasant 11 . For example, people who are not 12 to working at night can find that 13 of sleep causes them to 14 badly at work. 15 the daily cycle of sleeping and 16 , we also have other cycles which 17 longer than one day. A way to mine your subconscious① for clues to your motivations, desires and fears? No need to have years of treatment or analysis. Just look to your dreams. “You can ignore your dreams, but you are really doing harm to yourself,” says Lauri Quinn Loewenberg. “If so, you’re letting red flags pass you by, letting great ideas pass you by.” Some sleep researchers believe dreams are more directly related to our moods and emotions and can serve as tools to self-understanding. Dreams occur during the REM (rapid eye movement) cycles of sleep each night. For adults, that means about every 90 minutes. The first period of REM sleep may be short, 5 to 10 minutes, followed by longer periods, finally reaching an hour or more in the fourth or fifth period. When people are dreaming, brain scans show a lot of activities. The brain is online during dreams. The experiences you have during the day are connected during dream sleep. People we know or experiences we’ve had at different times in our lives may be different in the same dream. AmyBeth Gilstrap has had the same recurring② dream that annoyed her since Hurricane Katrina drove her and her daughter and friends out of New Orleans. Ms. Gilstrap says, “It is always spies. My job is to get people to some place.” She’s certain the dream is related to her effort in the hurricane to help several families leave. Sometimes her cats also are part of that dream. That’s because she went back into New Orleans, before it was allowed, to rescue her cats. Today, through brain scans scientists have known that the parts of the brain that control emotion and long-term memory are active during REM sleep. Notes: subconscious adj. 潜意识的 recur v. 再次发生;循环 Choose the best answers according to the above: 1. The passage is mainly to tell readers ______. The weight-loss world is full of assertions①, rarely proved, that some pill can help you “burn calories while you sleep.” But a recent Dutch study reports that it can be done – simply by eating more lean protein②. Researchers report for the first time that consuming nearly a third of daily calories as lean protein – for example, lean meats without the skin – speeds up a person’s metabolism③ during sleep and that higher protein intake increases the burning of calories and fat during the day. Plus, when the study’s participants, who were all women of healthy weight, ate more protein, they felt fuller, more satisfied and less hungry than when they consumed a diet with the amount of protein, about 10 percent of calories. The findings suggest that adding lean protein to your daily food “enables you to reach the same level of satiety④ that you are used to with about 80 percent of your normal energy intake,” notes Margriet Westerterp-Plantenga. “That means you can eat about 20 percent less and still have the same satiety.” What gives protein its caloric edge? It’s more difficult for the body to metabolize protein than either fat or carbohydrates⑤. The body also doesn’t store protein as efficiently as it does carbohydrates or fat. So protein is more likely to be burned and that in turn requires more oxygen and helps you feel satisfied in the hours after eating. But the latest findings don’t mean it’s time to dust off those high-protein diet books. The current study limited fat to about 30 percent of daily calories, and included 40 percent of calories as healthy carbohydrates, including fruit and vegetables. For example, lunch included bread, soy milk, fruit yogurt, tuna in water, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese and salad dressing.
