学术英语视听说unit8原文TidalwavesToday,ourlectureisabouttidalwaves.I’lldefinewhatatidalwaveisandwhatatidalwaveisnot.I’llalsodefinesomeothertermsrelatedtotidalwaves.So,whatisatidalwave?Atidalwaveisaverylargeandverydestructivewallofwater.Thiswallofwaterrushesinfromtheoceantowardtheland.ScientistsusetheJapaneseword”tsunami”todescribethiswaves.InJapanese,tsunamiactuallymeansharborwave,youseethewavesaretallestwhentheyreachaharborwhichisanareaoftheoceanjustbeforethelandwhereboatsarekept.Now,normalwavesarecausedbytidesorstormsoverthewater.ButdidyouknowthattidalwavesarenotcausedbystormsandthattidalwavesarenotreallytidesatallAtruetidecanbedefinedastheregularriseandfallofoceanwatersatdefinitetimeseachday.Atidalwaveortsunamicomesrushinginsuddenlyandunexpectedlyatanytime.Itcouldcomerushinginduringthemorning,intheafternoonorduringthenight.Atidalwaveiscausedbyanunderwaterearthquake,toquakemeanstomoveupanddownorfromsidetosideveryquickly,toquakealsomeanstoshakeortotremble,whenanearthquaketakesplaceundertheocean,theoceanfloorshakesandtrembles,andsometimestheoceanfloorshifts.Thatistheoceanfloormoves.Itistheshiftingoftheoceanfloorthatproducesthetidalwave.Theearthandwatermove,causingatidalwave.Thetidalwavebegintomoveacrosstheseaatgreatspeed.In2011,amassiveearthquakeoccurredofthecoastofJapan,thequakecausedadoublewavetsunami.Adoublewavetsunamicanalsobecalledamergingtsunami.Whenamergingtsunamiordouble-wavetsunamioccurs,twoverylargewavescombined.Thisincreasesthedestructionwhenthetidalwavereachesland.Tsunamishavetakenmanylivesinthepast,forinstance,thetsunamicausedbya9.0magnitudeearthquakeoffthecoastofJapanonMarch11,2011,tookthelivesofmorethan20thousandpeople.ThetsunamialsodestroyedlargeareasofnortheasternJapan.Today,scientistscanpredictthatatidalwavewillhitland,thesescientistsuseaseismograph,aseismographisatypeofinstrumentthatrecallsthestrength,directionandlengthofanearthquake.Theseismographtellsthescientistsiftheearthquakeundertheoceanislikelytocauseatidalwave.Soalthoughitisnotpossibletostopatidalwave,it'spossibletowarnpeoplethatatidalwaveiscoming.Thiswarningcansavemanylifes.CTRL+A全选可调整字体属性及字体大小-CAL-FENGHAI.NetworkInformationTechnologyCompany.2020YEAR
