The introduction of Henan’s scenic spot Henan, whose shortened form is“Yu”, located in eastern China. Zhengzhou is the provincial capital. Henan is often referred to as “Zhongyuan” or “Zhongzhou”, which literally means “central plains” or “midland”. Henan is the birthplace of Chinese civilization with over 5,000 years of history and remained China’s cultural, economic, and political center until approximately 1,000 years ago. Numerous heritages have been left behind including the ruins of Shang Dynasty capital city Yinxu(殷墟) and the Shaolin Temple(少林寺). Four of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China(八大古都), Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng, and Zhengzhou are located in Henan. In a word, Henan possesses especially human cultural and geographic advantages, which result that Henan has abundant traveling resources. Today I’ll lead you into Henan by introducing six distinctive scenery of Henan, including Yuntai Mountain(云台山), Luoyang Peony(洛阳牡丹), Shaolin Temple(少林寺), White Horse Temple(白马寺), the Qingming River Park(清明上河园) and Longmen Grottoes(龙门石窟). No.1 Yuntai Mountain(云台山) The Global Yuntai Mountain Geological Park is located at the south foot of the Taihang Mountain in Xiuwu County of Jiaozuo. It mainly consists of the Yuntai Mountain Natural Scenic Area, Qinglong Mountain Resort and other surrounding areas. The park is known for its massive gardening areas, overhanging high cliffs, flying waterfalls, secluded valleys and spring water. Yuntai Mountain gains its name from history. And it had been the secluded place of Seven Bamboo Forest Sages of the Wei and the Jin Period. Many historical stories are spreading in the area related to some fames once visited here. It is said that the Medicine King, Sun Simiao, once collected Chinese medicine here. No.2 Luoyang Peony Peony, a flowering plant unique in China. Peony planting can date back to the first and second century, recorded in written form in “Shennong” herbal classic, becoming famous in the Tang Dynasty and it was known as the finest flower in the Song Dynasty. Though peony can grows in hilly areas of Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Shandong at the same time, the Luoyang Peony is the most famous. This is largely because that a number of well-known Chinese poems, prose and stories from a thousand years ago might be of help to spread the reputation of the Luoyang Peony far and wide. No.3 the Shaolin Temple The name “Shaolin” is closely related with its location, meaning “Temple in the forest of the Shaoshi Mountain(少室山)”. The Shaolin Temple is a Chan Buddhist temple at Song Shan(嵩山) near Zhengzhou City Henan Province in Dengfeng China. Lying at the foot of the Wuru Peak of the Shaoshi Mountain to the north-west of Dengfeng County, the temple is long famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu. The temple is also favored by nature with circling springs, flourishing forests, competing hills and sights of quietness and elegance. The Shaolin Temple is regarded as the origin of Zen(禅) while Dharma(达摩) is considered the founder of Zen in Chinese Buddhism. And it is the Mahayana Buddhist monastery perhaps best known to the Western world. N0.4 the White Horse Temple The Baima Temple ( the White Horse Temple, built in 68 A.D in the Eastern Han Dynasty), located 12 kilometers east of Luoyang flanked by the Mang Mountain to the north and the Luo River to the south, according to tradition, is the first temple since the introduction of Buddhism into China. Being significant to the spread and development of Chinese Buddhism as well as to the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world, the Baima Temple enjoys a special position in the history of Chinese Buddhism, laurelled as “The Origin of Chinese Buddhism” and “No. 1 ancient temple of China”, though it is small in size in comparison to many other temple in China. N0.5 the Qingming River Park The park, which is located in western shore of beautiful Longting Lake in Kaifeng, is a large-scale historical cultural theme park with 33 hectares total floor space in Chinese famous ancient city Kaifeng. It was founded in July 1992 in accordance with the famous scroll painting by Zhang Zeduan, a famous artist in Northern Song Dynasty and opened to the public in October 28th 1998. The painting is a valuable life drawing for social custom, which represents social life, social custom and building structure of Kaifeng as ancient city in Northern Song Dynasty. Although it only shows part Kaifeng, it is very easy to know other streets’ situation by supposing. What is more interesting is that Zhang Zeduan put it into drawing from life one thousand years ago while Kaifeng’s people put it into life from drawing one thousand years later. Walking in MILLENNIUM CITY PARK makes tourists getting such felling that they have returned to one thousand years ago. N0.6 Longmen Grottoes Longmen Grottoes, one of the four Grottoes of China, is located in a beautiful place of green mountains and clear water, 13 kilometers away to the south of Luoyang. The grottoes were started around the year 493 when Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) moved the capital to Luoyang and were continuously built during the 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The images, many once painted, were carved into caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan and Longmenshan mountains, running east and west. The Yi River flows northward between them and the area used to be called Yique. There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 1,400 caves, ranging from an 1 inch (25 mm) to 57 feet (17 m) in height. The area also contains nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, whence the name “Forest of Ancient Stelae”, as well as over sixty Buddhist pagodas(佛塔). In 2000, the site was inscribed upon the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity,” for its perfection of an art form, and its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of Tang China.
