六、閱讀測驗 (每小格1 分,共10分)
1、There are many superstitions around the world. Some of them involve animals, such as cats, crickets and even bees.
A black cat crossing your path is supposed to be bad luck. This superstition dates back to ancient Egypt. One of the Egyptian gods was the Goddess Bast, who was a black female cat. During that time, the Egyptians killed many Christians. So, as Christianity grew stronger and spread around the world, Christian priests tried to erase Egyptian religions. They convinced their
followers that black cats were demons and when one crossed your path, it would create a wall of evil, blocking you from entering
heaven.
A cricket is a sign of good luck all over the world. In some countries, people keep crickets in small pots, believing that the singing crickets bring luck, and that the longer the crickets live, the more good luck they will bring. In China, the cricket has been
used as a watchdog because the chirping will stop when there is any sign of trouble. It is bad luck to kill a cricket, even if it is an
accident.
It is believed that bees are very wise and can tell the future. If a bee flies into your home, it is a sign that you will have a
visitor soon. Besides, bees can tell you when it is going to rain. They will hide in their hive right before a rain shower. However,
beware of lazy bees, they are a sign that a disaster is coming.

2、Hindu people in India treat cows as sacred not only because of the milk that cows provide, but also because of the religion these people practice. For Hindus, the cow is a symbol of life and nature.
Like the Earth, cows give much while asking for little in return. What’s more, it’s not just cows’ milk that is useful; even cow
droppings can be dried and burned as fuel for cooking and heating. Cow droppings can also be spread on gardens to help grow the
vegetables that people eat every day. Hindus are grateful to cows for these things, and the majority of people in India won’t eat
beef as a result.
Respect for cows is also based on the Hindu religion. Hindus don’t pray to cows (this is a common false idea), but cows do get special treatment. One of Hinduism’s most important gods, Krishna, took care of cows and protected them. In the Hindu
language (called Sanskrit), the cow is called Aghanya?this name means “that which may not be killed.” People believe it’s lucky
to feed cows, and it’s traditional to give them snacks in the hope that the cows will bless people in return.
Cows in India often wander freely, even in cities, and this causes problems. Sometimes cows cause traffic jams by sitting in the roadways. People are superstitious about moving the sacred animals, so everyone waits until the cows move on. To solve this
problem, the Indian government is paying people to catch cows, to get them off the streets in cities like New Delhi. However, since there are so many cows, and they enjoy a special place in Indian society, it’s likely to take a long time.
