What other modern uses of the wheel can you name?1-Text A1-Text AText ATextComprehension CheckTA-TextTA-TextText ARead the article. In your opinion, which is the most important invention. The Most Important Invention Which of the following inventions do you think people would say is the most important: the car, the toothbrush, the microwave, the computer, or the cell phone? If you answered toothbrush, then you agreed with 42% of the people who were asked this same question in a survey done by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Apparently, people have wanted clean teeth for a long time. From as far back as 3000 B.C., there is evidence of people chewing pieces of wood to clean their mouths. In Roman times, people began to clean their teeth by rubbing them with a piece of cloth. But neither of these methods was particularly effective. So who deserves the credit for the low-tech, but efficient invention of the toothbrush? A Chinese emperor made the first toothbrush in 1498. It consisted of hard animal hair stuck into a piece of bone. But toothbrushes didn't become popular immediately. They weren't commonly know until the 1600s. Even then, they were so expensive that all the family members in a house usually shared one! Toothbrushes have come a long way since then. Nowadays, there are many versions for sale from basic, practical ones to state-of-the-art electric ones. Even if you don't think the toothbrush is the most important invention, you probably agree that the world is a better, cleaner place because of it! ◆ apparently◆ apparently◆ apparentlyadv. used to say that you have heard that something is true, although you are not completely sure about it 显然地 ◆ Apparently they’re getting divorced. ◆ Campaign funds have been used for apparently illegal activities.for salefor salefor salefor sale 待售 ◆ I am sorry this painting’s not for sale. ◆ She has put her house up for sale.TA-Comprehension CheckTA-Comprehension CheckComprehension CheckCheck whether each statement is true (T) or false (F). How did people communicate ideas to people too far away before the invention of the printing press? 2. Write down all the possibilities and discuss them with your partner.TB-Text-1TB-Text-1Text B Long before the telephone, the television, the radio, and the computer, the written word was the only way to communicate ideas to people too far away to talk with. Until the 6th or 7th century, all books had to be written by hand. Creating a book was difficult, and in comparison with today, very few books existed. Therefore, very few people read books. In the 6th and 7th centuries, the Chinese invented a way to print pages by carving characters and pictures on wooden, ivory, or clay blocks. They would put ink on the blocks and then press paper onto the ink, printing a page from the block. This process is called letterpress printing. The invention of letterpress printing was a great advance in communication because each block could be inked many times and many copies of each page could be made. Many books could now be made. Therefore, many people could read the same book. If you asked a large number of people what the most important invention has been, many would say the printing press. Others might say the wheel. But even though it’s debatable whether the appearance of the printing press affected the course of history more than the wheel, the printing press ranks within the top two or three inventions in history.Until the 6th or 7th century, all books had to be written by hand.ladle for pouring hot metalTB-Text-2TB-Text-2Text B Later, in the 11th century, another great advance occurred. The Chinese invented “movable” type. Each character was made as a separate block which could be used many times in many texts. This meant that pages could be created by putting together individual characters rather than having to have whole pages carved. Movable type was much more efficient than the earlier Chinese print blocks because books could be created much more quickly by people with less skill. In Europe, movable type was used for the first time in the 15th century. And there, Johannes Gutenberg invented typecasting, a way to make movable type much more quickly, by melting metal and pouring it into the forms of the letters. This greatly increased the speed of printing, and eventually made books available to many more people.◆ debatable◆ debatable◆ debatableadj. not certain; open to question; arguable 可争辩的;成问题的 ◆ I agreed with their first choice but the second choice was slightly more debatable. ◆ The value of some of the experiments is debatable.◆ movable◆ movable◆ movableadj. able to be moved and not fixed in one place or position 活动的,变动的 ◆ We have movable screens dividing our office into working areas. ◆ What was being built was the largest movable structure that had ever been created.in comparison within comparison within comparison within comparison with 比较起来 ◆ A bear is a friendly beast in comparison with a tiger. ◆ I have done little this year in comparison with what I did last year. ◆ letterpress printing◆ letterpress printing◆ letterpress printingletterpress printing 凸版印刷;活版印刷 ◆ Letterpress printing is a great invention in the whole world. ◆ Letterpress printing is originally used in China.be available tobe available tobe available tobe available to(指物)可用的;可以买到的 ◆ Tickets are available at the box office. ◆ An increase in the number of jobs is available to women.TB-Comprehension CheckTB-Comprehension CheckComprehension CheckFill in the blanks and match the events.
