(2000 words) How to make the team communication better and effective in an intercultural business communication We are now in quiet a different world than ever before: we human beings in all over the world are doing intercultural contact more frequent, more abundant and more significant thanks to the advance of technology, such as mobile phones, Internets, much faster and more convenient transportation. We are now in a world which is called “global village”: business makes worldwide countries and individuals working together; the Internet enable people from various nations communicate and cooperate together; and so on. More important, team work and interculture business make a big difference in such a world. And further more, an effective team communication will definitely contributes much to interculture business communication. So, naturally, what can we do to make the team communication better and effective in an interculture business communication? From where I stand, first and foundational, a good knowledge of English is indispensable. Now that English has already become the global language, nearly all kinds of interculture business teams? communication cannot do it without English. If one is incapable of English he will unable to conduct communication just for the sake of his language. For example, a Chinese young man is ordered by his company to research and develop a new product with his American colleague and Japanese workmate. Unfortunately, the young man is excellent at his job but could?t get himself understood in English. Considering this situation, his company send another person who is good at English. The young man missed a great chance in his career only due to his poor English. What a pity! In a word, team members are supposed to study hard to be expert at English, in order to be perfectly understood by other people from other countries in the team. When it comes to how to learn English, there are countless ways to make it, and also it is not our topic today. However, language alone does not ensure successful communication,especially interculture communication. For better understanding, let?s look at some of the communication cases between people from Chinese and English cultures: 1) One cold winter day in a Chinese city, Li Mei on her way to the library met an American professor who knew very little about China. After greeting him, Li Mei said, “ It?s rather cold. You?d better put on more clothes.” But the professor did not appear happy on hearing this. Why? 2) You are the only Chinese among some Americans. One of them is telling a joke. You feel good because you understand every word. All of sudden, everyone is laughing. Everyone except you. Why? 3) There has been a very famous brand of battery in China: White Elephant. Suppose this product is to be exported to the UK or the USA, it is very likely to fail without change its band name. Why? In each of the situations, there is something “wrong”. But this has nothing to do with the language, the problem lies in culture in which the language is used. In the first case, Americans (and many Westerns too) do not like to be told what to do as they tend to be independent;while Chinese are in the habit of shoeing and accepting concerns. The scend case tells us that sometimes connotations of words are keys to understanding. In the third case, a white elephant, arousing beautiful association in the minds of Chinese, stands for something big but useless in the English culture. From these simple cases, it is not difficult to find out what an important role culture plays in communication. To make team communication better and effective in an interculture business communication, everybody equips with each member?s cultural backgrounds is essential. Before entering the team, it is appropriate to collect details of each teammate?s culture. Going abroad to integrate yourself in native society and native life can be the best way to have an overall and comprehensive understanding of its culture and its language. Also, make friends with those people who are bear this kind of culture will help to promote the interculture business team communication. Here is a little story: Jose and Jim work together in a restaurant and had become friendly because both of them were also studying. One day, as they were leaving work, Jim asked Jose, “Jose, I need a favor, I have no change. Could you lend me a dollar so I can take the bus to get home? I will pay you back tomorrow.” “Sure, Jim. No problem. You don?t have to pay me back.” said Jose, as he handed Jin a dollar. Next day, Jim went over to Jose and handed him a dollar, saying, “Thanks, Jose. I really appreciated this last night.” “Forget it,” said Joe, as he handed Jim back his dollar. “No, I insist. I do not want to take advantage of a friend. What if I needed to borrow money again sometime? If I didn?t pay you back, I would feel wrong asking to borrow money again,” said Jim, as he put the dollar into Jose pocket. Jose answered, “But that?s what friends are for. In Spanish, we have a saying, „today for you, tomorrow for me.? If you pay me back, I will feel that I won?t be able to ask you for money when I need it. I will feel like you are closing the door on me, that there is no trust between us. I thought we are friends. How can I take the money?” Jose handed back the dollar. “But I won?t feel right if you don?t take it!” said Jim. For Jose, in his culture it is very important to be generous. Generosity and respect for others? generosity are two values that explain many Hispanic and Middle Eastern customs and attitudes. That? why Jim?s refusal to accept Jose? generosity made Jose question their friendship. In such a culture, most people don?t like to think themselves as stingy and these are terrible insults to a Hispanic or Arab. Americans see it all differently. They see the value of self-reliance as very important. Owing too many favors means dependent. American cannot respect themselves if they feel too much “in debt” to other people, financially or otherwise. Instead, they prefer to be “free” of obligations to others. To let someone else pay for them is “to take advantage of”, which is wrong. Though interculture friends have barriers, interculture team members try to be friends. Being friends make problems easier to solve. First,To understand the human nature and Improve interpersonal and master successful interpersonal skills first step is: correct understanding of the nature of person and person. Understand and human nature can be summarized as simple, "according to the nature of people to agree with them," "put yourself in the other identity people", and don't use their eyes to look at others, more do not impose its others.
