Zweck
Das Analysenverfahren dient zur Ermittlung von
Emissionen aus nichtmetallischen Materialien, die für
Formteile in Kraftfahrzeugen zum Einsatz kommen,
zum Beispiel:
Textilien, Teppichböden, Klebstoffe, Dichtmassen,
Schaumstoffe, Leder, Kunststoffteile, Folien, Lacke

1 VOC-Wert = Volatile Organic Compounds
Scope
This analytical method is intended for the determina-
tion of emissions from non-metallic materials used for
moulded parts in motor vehicles such as:
textiles, carpets, adhesives, sealing compounds,
foams, leather, plastic parts, films and sheets, paints
or material combinations.
The materials are characterized with regard to the
type and quantity of the organic substances out
gassed from them.
In this method two semi-quantitative cumulative val-
ues are determined which allow the emission of vola-
tile organic compounds (VOC value1) and the portion
of condensable substances (FOG value) to be esti-
mated. Furthermore, single substance emissions are
determined.
During the analysis, the samples are thermally ex-
tracted, and the emissions are separated by gas
chromatography and detected by mass spectrometry.
This test method provides values which are only valid
under the conditions described in this Rec-
ommendation. The results which can be achieved
using this method are not appropriate
• for making further estimations of any kind of
the health effects of the emitted sub-stances,
• to be used in any form as a basis for the esti-
mation of concentrations which might be found
in the interior of a complete vehicle in station-
ary condition, while driving or in conditions
similar to driving.

1 Definitionen
1.1 Thermodesorptionsanalyse
Bei der Thermodesorptionsanalyse (TDS) werden
geringe Materialmengen in einem Desorptionsrohr
definiert aufgeheizt, die dabei emittierenden flüchti-
gen Substanzen mit Hilfe eines Inertgas-Stromes in
einer Kühlfalle eines Temperatur-programmierbaren
Verdampfers kryofokusiert.
Nach Beendigung der Ausheizphase wird die Kühl-
falle rasch auf 280°C erhitzt. Dabei verdampfen die
fokussierten Substanzen. Sie werden anschließend
in der gaschromatografischen Trennsäule aufge-
trennt und massen-spektrometrisch detektiert.
F Anhang 7.3 zeigt den schematischen Aufbau der
Thermodesorptionsanalyse.
Durch Kalibration mit Bezugssubstanzen ist eine
halbquantitative Abschätzung der Emission, ausge-
drückt in „µg/g“², möglich.
Wert verwendet. Anhand ihrer Massenspektren und
Retentionsindizes können Signalpeaks Substanzen
zugeordnet werden.
1 Definitions
1.1. Thermal desorption analysis
In a thermal desorption analysis (TDS), small vol-
umes of material are heated in a desorber tube in a
defined process. The volatile substances emitted
during this process are cryofocused by means of an
inert gas stream in the cold trap of an evaporator
with programmable temperature.
Following the heating phase, the cold trap is heated
up quickly to 280°C. The focused substances evap-
orate during this process. They are then split in the
gas-chromatographic separation column and de-
tected by mass spectrometry.
F Annex 7.3 illustrates the principle of
the set-up of a thermal desorption analysis.
Calibrating with reference substances allows for a
semi-quantitative estimation to be carried out, ex-
pressed as “µg/g“².
Toluene for the VOC analysis and n-Hexadecane
for the FOG value are used as quantitative refer-
ence sub-stances. Based on the mass spectra and
retention indices, substances can be assigned to
the signal peaks.
3
VOC-Wert = Volatile Organic Compounds = leichtflüch-
tige Substanzen. Dieser VOC bezieht sich ausschließlich
auf das hier beschriebene Verfahren. Er ist mit VOC-
Werten anderer Verfahren nicht vergleichbar
1.2 VOC value³ in accordance with
VDA 278
________________________________
² µg of substance per gram of test portion which is
emitted and detected under these measuring condi-
tions. This is not the actual content.
___________________________________
3VOC value = Volatile Organic Compounds. This VOC
value refers exclusively to the method described here.
It is not comparable with other methods.
Der VOC-Wert nach VDA278 ist die Summe der
leicht- bis mittelflüchtigen Substanzen.
Er wird als Toluoläquivalent berechnet. Mit der hier
beschriebenen Methode werden die Substanzen
im Siede- bzw. Elutionsbereich bis n-Pentacosan
(C25) erfasst und ausgewertet.
The VOC value in accordance with VDA 278 is
the total of the readily volatile to medium volatile
substances. It is calculated as toluene equivalent.
The method described in this Recommendation
allows substances in the boiling / elution range up
to n-Pentacosane (C25) to be determined and
analyzed.
90°C erhitzt. Der VOC-Wert wird als Doppelbestim-
mung ermittelt. Als Ergebnis wird der höhere Wert der
Zweifach-Bestimmung angegeben.
It can be assumed that these substances can be
detected when analyzing the air of the vehicle
interior. For the analysis, the sample is heated at
90 °C for 30 minutes. The VOC value is deter-
mined by two measurements. The higher value
of the measurements is indicated as the result.
1.3 Fog-Wert nach VDA 278
Zur Bestimmung des Fog-Wertes wird im Anschluss
der VOC-Analyse die zweite Probe im Desorptionsrohr
belassen und nochmals 60 Minuten bei 120°C er-
wärmt.
Diese Substanzen können bei Raumtemperatur leicht
kondensieren und zum Foggingbeschlag an der Wind-
schutzscheibe beitragen.
1.3 FOG value in accordance with
VDA 278
To determine the FOG value, the second sample is
retained in the desorption tube after the VOC analy-
sis and reheated to 120 °C for 60 minutes.
These substances condense easily at room tempera-
ture and contribute to the fogging of the windscreen.
2 Probennahme, Lagerung
offen gelagert. Abweichungen von dieser Vorgehens-
weise müssen dokumentiert werden.
2 Sampling, storage
The age of the sample to be analyzed should be de-
fined. The material to be examined should normally
be sealed airtight within 8 hours of its production. The
sample should be delivered to the laboratory without
delay. During transportation and until unpacking of
the sample, a temperature of 23 °C should not be
exceeded. Immediately before commencement of the
analysis, the samples should be stored uncovered at
room temperature (23 °C max.) for 7 days. Any de-
viations from this procedure should be documented.
Für die Untersuchung wird eine repräsentative Probe
entnommen.
- Fa. Flöter, 71701 Schwieberdingen,
- Fa. Nawrot, 51688 Wipperführt
A representative sample should be taken for exami-
nation. Contamination should be prevented. Each
sample should be welded airtight in aluminium com-
posite foils4.
Alternatively, the sample should be fully wrapped
twice in thick aluminium foil (30 µm) so that it is air-
tight, folding the edges several times. The sample
should then be sealed in a polyethylene bag and sent
to the laboratory.
4 Examples of procurement addresses for aluminium com
posite foils (export foils as defined in DIN 55531-1):
The FOG value is the total of substances with low
volatility which elute from the retention time of n-
Tetradecane (inclusive). It is calculated as hexa-
decane equivalent. Substances in the boiling
range of n-Alkanes "C14“ to "C32“ are determined
and analyzed.
