ornclosetotheearth,closetotheearthhadhelived,andthelawthereofwasnotnewtohim.Itwasthelawofallflesh.Naturewasnotkindlytotheflesh.Shehadnoconcernforthatconcretethingcalledtheindividual.Herinterestlayinthespecies,therace.ThiswasthedeepestabstractionoldKoskoosh’sbarbaricmindwascapableof,buthegraspeditfirmly.”(ThisparagraphrevealsthetypicalconceptofanaturalistwriterthatJackLondonwas.His“NorthlandTales,”“TheLawofLife”included,areexamplesofhisreadyacceptanceoftheconceptsofliterarynaturalismwhichattemptstoapplyscientificprinciplesofobjectivitytoitsstudyofhumanbeings.TheshortstoryremindsusofwhattheFrenchwriterEmileZolasaidaboutthistypeofwriting:thattheidealofaNaturalistwastheselectionoftruthfulinstancestobeplacedinthe“laboratoryconditions”offiction,wherethehypothesesofthetheoriesaboutthenatureandoperationoftheforcesthatworkedonhumanbeingscouldbeputtothetest.Theastonishingachievementsintheareasofnaturalandsocialsciences,especiallyinthesecondhalfofthe19thcentury,hadgreatlyinfluencedJackLondonandotherwritersofthetime.Theabovequotedwordsreflectthewriter’responsetotherevolutioninthoughtthatmodernscienceproduced,especiallyCharlesDarwin’stheoryofevolutionandsurvivalofthefittestthroughnaturalselection.ThistheorytoldtheNaturalisticwritersthatman’sexistencewasshapedbyheredityandenvironment,overwhichhehadlittlecontrol.Therefore,thecitedparagraphrevealstheauthor’spessimisticunderstandingofman’scapabilityandhisviewofdeterminism.FromwhatgoesoninthemindofOldKoskoosh,wecanhaveaglimpseofthewriter’ssadmessageregardinghumanbeingsaspassivevictimsofnaturalandsocialenvironment.)
