第页共9页第页共9页学号:姓名:系:专业:班级:装订密封线考生答题不得出现红色字迹,除画图外,不能使用铅笔答题;答题留空不足时,可写到试卷背面;请注意保持试卷完整。请从此页开始答题:ReviewofTheShawshankRedemptionBackgroundAdaptedfromStephenKing'snovellaRitaHayworthandShawshankRedemption,theShawshankRedemptionisnotaReinermovieperse.ItisaproductionofCastleRockPictures(Reiner'sfilmcompany),andranksamongthebestfilmedversionsofanyKingstoriestodate.Publishedin1994,itnearlydefeatedForrestGumpintheOscaraward.FilmedonlocationinadisusedOhioprison,theShawshankRedemptionissetinaplaceofperpetualdreariness.Whatlittlecolorthereisdrabandlifeless(lotsofgraysandmutedgreensandblues),andtherearetimeswhenthefilmisashadeawayfromblack-and-white(givecredittocinematographerRogerDeakins,alongtimeCohenbrotherscollaborator).FirsttimefeaturedirectorFrankDarabonthelmsafleetofimpressiveperformances.Inthismovie,RednarratesafantasticstoryhappenedtoAndy,areservedbanker,whoiswronglyjudgedandputintoShawshankPrisonforlifesentence.Andysurvivesfromthesisters’sexualharassment,thenvoluntarilyofferfinancialservicetothoseguardsandwarden;onthebasisoftheclouthetherebyacquires,Andysubsequentlytransformstheprisonlibraryintoasourceoflearningandcontactwiththeoutsideworldforalltheinmates.Afterthedubiousdeathoftheyoungmate,awarethathisreleaseisoutofthequestion,Andystrengthenshiswilltogainfreedombyhisownhands.39yearslater,inastormingnight,crawlingthroughthetunnelhechippedforunknownyearsanda500hundredyardssewer,AndymanagesescapingandfinallyarrivesZihuatenejio,afairyplaceinMexicobythePacificOcean.TheShawshankRedemptionisnotadepressingstory.Thereisalotofscaldingironyandhumorinit,andwarmthinthefriendshipthatbuildsupbetweenAndyandRed.Thereisevenexcitementandsuspense,althoughnotwhenweexpectit.Butmostlythefilmisanallegoryaboutholdingontoasenseofpersonalworth,despiteeverything.Ifthefilmisperhapsalittleslowinitsmiddlepassages,maybethatispartoftheidea,too,togiveusasenseoftheleadenpassageoftime,beforethegloryofthefinalredemption.Astotheperfectperformanceinthismovie,theseveralleadingcharactersmakesgreatcontributions.TimRobbins,asAndrewDufresne,playsthewronglyconvictedmanwithquietdignity.Andy'sireisinternal;hedoesn'trantabouthissituationorthecorruptnessofthesystemthathasimprisonedhim.Hisunwillingnesstosurrenderhopewinshimtheadmirationofsomeandthecontemptofothers,andallowstheaudiencetoidentifywithhimthatmuchmorestrongly.EllisBoydRedding(MorganFreeman),orRed,ashisfriendscallhim,istheself-proclaimedSearsandRoebuckoftheShawshankPrison(foraprice,hecangetjustaboutanythingfromtheoutside).Hisisthenarrativevoiceand,foronce,thedisembodiedwordsaid,ratherthanintrudeupon,thestory.Servingalifesentenceformurder,Redisamixtureofcynicismandsincerity-amanwithagoodsoulwhohasdoneaviledeed.HisfriendshipwithAndyisoneofTheShawshankRedemption'shighlights.Ultimately,thestandoutactoristhevenerableJamesWhitmore,doinghisfinestworkinyears.Whitmore'sBrooksisabrilliantlyrealizedcharacter,andthesceneswithhimattemptingtocopewithlifeoutsideofShawshankrepresentsoneofthefilm'smostmovingandeffectivesequences.2.ThemeTheShawshankRedemptionhasnothingtodowithlove,butafilmaboutfriendship,hopeandfreedom.Hope,morethananythingelse,drivestheinmatesatShawshankandgivesthemthewilltolive.Andy’ssheerdeterminationtomaintainhisownsenseofself-worthandescapekeepshimfromdyingoffrustrationandangerinsolitaryconfinement.Hopeisanabstract,passiveemotion,akintothepassive,immobile,andinertlivesoftheprisoners.Andysetsaboutmakinghopearealityintheformoftheagonizingprogresshemakeseachyeartunnelinghiswaythroughhisconcretecellwall.EvenAndy’seven-keeledandwell-balancedtemperament,however,eventuallysuccumbtothebleaknessofprisonlife.RednotesthatTommyWilliams’srevelationthathecouldproveAndy’sinnocencewaslikeakeyunlockingacageinAndy’smind,acagethatreleasedatigercalledHope.ThishopereinvigoratesAndyandspreadstomanyoftheotherinmatesintheprison.InhisletteraddressedtoRed,Andywritesthat“hopeisagoodthing,”whichintheendisallthatRedhasleft.Red’sdecisiontogotoMexicotofindAndyistheultimateproofofRed’sownredemption,notfromhislifeasacriminalbutfromhiscompromisedstate,bereftofhopeandwithnoreasontoembracelifeorthefuture.Red’sclosingwords,asheembarkstentativelyontoanewpath,showthathopeisadifficultconcepttosustainbothinsidetheprisonandout.NeveramomentdoseAndyceasehishope.ItisstillimpressivethatthepeacefulandquietsmileappearsonAndy’facewhenhewatchhisinmatesdrinkinghiscoolbeersfreelyandwhenheimmersedinMozart’LeNozzediFigaro.Hisinnerhopestimulateshimkeepingforwardregardlessofthecruelreality.AndhopeishisgifttohisfriendRed,whonolongereventriestoimpresstheparoleboardathishearings.Thepowerofhopecanneverbeneglected.Hopeisagoodthing,maybethebestofthings,andnogoodthingeverdies.3.Conflicts3.1BibleVSRockhammerWardenNortonembodiesthehypocrisiesandcontradictionsofthepenitentiarysystem.Thenationalexposureandadulationhegetsforhis“Inside-Out”programbeliesandconcealsthecorruptionthatprevailsduringhistenureandthecampaignofthreats,intimidation,abuse,andexcessivecrueltyheemploystomaintaincontroloftheinmates.Attimesalignedwithimagesofdeath,hisfaceiscomparedtoacoldslatetombstone—Nortonisaself-deludeddespotwhojustifieshisexploitationandthepromotionofhisself-interestattheexpenseofothersinthenameofhisfaithandthefire-and-brimstoneBiblepassagesheoftenquotes."Salvationlieswithin,"advisesWardenNortonatonepoint.Nortondisguiseshishypocrite.Inwesternworld,theBibleleadsthemortaltotheParadise.Ironically,Nortoncommitssuicidewhenhisuglydealpublicizedtothemedia.“HISJUDGMENTCOMETHANDTHATRIGHTSOON.”Nortonpayshislifeforhisviciousdoings.Astoarockhammer,nobodywouldconnectitwithchippingatunnelouttheprison,sinceitisbelievedtospend600yearstofinishthetask.Andyspendsnomorethan19years.Itistherockhammer,tobemoreprecise,hisfaithandhope,notthebible,saveshimout.Biblecannotsaveeveryone,buttoteachthemtoself-save.3.2HopeVSInstitution“Fearcanholdyouprisoner.Hopecansetyoufree.”TheoldBrooksisatypicalexampletobeinstitutionalized.Heservesasalibrarianintheprisonfor50yearsorsoandhebecomesusedtoit.Hefearstheoutsideworld.Hegetsusedtolockhimselfintheprison.EverythingchangessothatBrooksdosen’tknowhowtoliveinanalienoutsideworld.PoorBrookshangshimself.“Believewhatyouwant.Thesewallsarefunny.Firstyouhate'em,thenyougetusedto'em.Afterlongenough,yougetsoyoudependon'em.That's"institutionalized."”Red’wordsistothepoint,andalsoitdefineshisverybeing.Hefears.Hewouldratherbetheveryguyintheprisoninsteadofnobodyoutside.WhenhefinallyrealizesthehopeunderlyinginAndy’mind,hebeginstotreatthingsdifferently.Thepowerofhopedefeatsinstitution.4.Analysisoftheintrinsiccause---Andy’charactersBeforehisprisonlife,heisasuperiorbanker,livedalifewithfameandfortune.TheimpressionAndyleavesiscalmandupright,introvertedanduptight,wordlessandthoughtful,meticulousandpatient.Heisextraordinaryinhiswork,butfailsinhismarriage.“ANDYDUFRESNE,mid-20’s,wirerimglasses,three-piecesuit.Undernormalcircumstancesarespectable,solidcitizen;hardlydangerous,perhapsevenmeek.Butthesecircumstancesarefarfromnormal.Heisdisheveled,unshaven,andverydrunk.Acigarettesmoldersinhismouth.Hiseyes,flintyandhard,arerivetedtothebungalowupthepath.”Hiswife,hadanaffairwithafamousgolfpro,andasksdivorce.ThoughAndyisnearlymadathiswife’smisbehavior,hedoesn’tsurrenderorbeghertostay.Heraisesabottleofbourbonandknockeditback..Andyjuststandsandlistens,devastated.Hedoesn’tlooklikemuchofakillernow;he’sjustasadlittlemanonadirtpathinthewoods,tearsstreamingdownhisface,aloadedgunheldlooselyathisside.Apatheticfigure,really.AndyconfesseshisinnerheartwithRedoneday.Tohiswife,Andyisahardmantoknow,likeaclosedbook.Andylovesher,buthejustdoesn’tknowhowtoexpressit.Healwaysseemslonelyandsober,nevertalkedmuch.Facingsuchahumiliation,hedrownshissorrowinliquor.Heisn’tmadenoughtokillhiswife,thoughthatideacomestohimoncebuteventuallyhegivesup.Healwaysbearseverythingquietly,andreceiveseverythingwithoutanycomplaints.Eveninthecourtroom,whereeverythinggoesagainsthim,hestillspeaksinsoft,measuredtones.Andyquietlyacceptshisunjustimprisonmentfortwolifesentences,calmly.Maybehewon’tbesentencedalllifeifhedefendsforhimselfandbehavesalittlemoreinnocent,however,hedosenot.Maybehetalksmorewithhiswife,hewouldhaveaperfectfamily,however,hedosenot.Thatishischaracters,otherwise,hewouldnotbesothoughtfulbutlonely.Itispartiallyhischaractersledtohismisfortune.Tosomeextent,Andyistheproductofasocietythatstresseshardworkanddedicationtoascribedstatuses.Atthesametime,itishischaractershelphimselfsurviveinthebrutalprison.Heispatient,meticulous.Andyisthatkindofbirdthatcanneverbetrappedinacage.AllprisonersinShawshankareinstitutionalizedexceptAndy.Hestrolleslikeamaninaparkwithoutacareorworryintheworld,lookedasif“heworeaninvisiblecoatthatcouldshieldhimfromtheprison”.UnliketheotherprisonersatShawshank,Andytriestomaintaintiestohislifeoutsidethewallsandsimplyrefusedtoresignedlyaccepthisroleasaprisoner.AndytellsRedatonepoint,“BettertohaveSundayexpeditionshere(intheprisonyard)thannoSundayexpeditionsatall.”NothingcanstopAndy’pursuitforfreedom.Whenitgoestotheendingpart,Andy’willingbecomesmorestronger.Maybehisplanbeginsassoonashestepsintotheprison.HecloselyapproachedRedtogetarockhammer,whichusedtochiselaholetotheoutside.Hishobbyofcarvingrocksculpturescovershisrealpurposeandshieldsthesoundofchiselingthewall.Andyvividlyillustrateshisintentiontopossibility.Whentheinmatestarringaprisonproof,Andyoffersunsolicitedadvicetooneguardhavingfinancialproblems,advicegroundedinhisownpastasabanker,onconditionthatthreebeersapieceforhisco-workers.ThenheearnsaspecialstatusinShawshankbybecomingataxconsultanttotheguardsandwarden.Histalentslowlyearnshimtherespectofhisfellowinmatesandeventheprisonstaff.Hestarvesofftheforcesofinstitutionandremainsafreemaninspiritifnotinflesh.HekeepswritingtotheStateSenateandrequestfundsdirectlyfromthemOnceeveryweek.10yearslettersfinallymadeAndybeabletorearrangetheprisonlibrary,wherehegetstouchfromtheoutsideworld.Hegraduallygainsmoreandmorefreedom,moreandmoreadvantageoustohisplan.After39yearsinprison,wheneverythingispreparatory,Andygetsescapedawayfromtheprisoninastormingnight.Heindeedfulfillshisambition.Heobtainshisfreedom.Andy’spersistence,patience,prudence,asw
