广州起义烈士陵园历史背景
第一次国内革命战争失败后，为挽救革命，反击国民党反动派的疯狂镇压和屠杀，1927年11月26日，中共广东委员会根据党的“八七”会议精神和中共中央指示，决定在广州发动起义，并成立了起义的总指挥部——革命军事委员会，由中共广东省委书记张太雷担任总指挥。
1927年12月11日凌晨，中共广东省委书记张太雷和叶挺、叶剑英、周文雍、恽代英、陈郁等同志领导发动了广州起义（包括崔庸健在内的150多名朝鲜同志和苏联驻广州领事馆人员也参加了起义）,在原市公安局成立了广州苏维埃政府——广州公社，发布了《广州苏维埃宣言》，宣告一切政权归属于工农红兵，并成立了工农红兵的总指挥部，广州人民热烈拥护苏维埃政府，纷纷参加战斗。13日下午，国民党反动派重占广州，进行惨绝人寰的大屠杀,观音山（越秀山）上，珠江河畔，尸骸遍地，血流成河,起义不幸失败。起义中有5700多名共产党人和革命群众惨遭杀害，其中有苏联、朝鲜等国际战友。
广州起义虽然前后只有三天，但它的意义是深远的，广州起义是创建人民政权的一次伟大的尝试，它与南昌起义、秋收起义连接在一起，成为中国共产党独立领导战争和创造人民军队的伟大开端。为纪念革命先烈，１９５７年广州市人民政府在此兴建了大型陵园，大门石壁上刻周总理题写的“广州公社起义烈士陵园”，气魄雄伟。
