Success_Is_Counted_Sweetest解读 Success Is Counted Sweetest ——Emily Dickinson Success is counted sweetest 从未成功的人们 By those who ne'er succeed. 最懂得成功的甜美. To comprehend a nectar 惟有极度的渴求 Requires sorest need. 方能体会甘露的滋味. Not one of all the purple host 身穿紫服的王者之师 Who took the flag today 今日虽高扬凯旗, Can tell the definition 却无一人能把胜利的含义 So clear of victory 说清道明. As he, defeated—dying— 战败者奄奄一息, On whose forbidden ear 失去听觉的耳朵里 The distant strains of triumph 才迸出遥远的凯旋歌 Burst, agonized and clear~ 悲痛而嘹亮. Success is counted sweetest By those who ne'er succeed. To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need. Not one of all the purple Host Who took the Flag today Can tell the definition So clear of Victory As he defeated -- dying -- On whose forbidden ear The distant strains of triumph Burst agonized and clear! Firstly, the poem has distinctive features with irregular punctuation such as the full stop in the first stanza and comma dash, especially the exclamation mark in the last stanza. It make me feel its difference from other poems. Secondly, rhyming words, such as ear, clear or sweetest, success, make the poem more fluent and beautiful and Alliteration enhances the poem's lyricism. (as he defeated—dying—) Thirdly, the tensions between winners and losers, victory and dying. Fourth, the first stanza is a complete observation and can stand alone. Stanzas two and three uses the images of a victorious army and one dying warrior and are dependent upon one another for complete understanding. Here, the poem seems paradoxical about “success”: the contradiction between victorious army and one dying warrior. Why the winners cannot feel the nectar of success? On the other hand, the dying man's ears are not forbidden; rather, the sounds of triumph are forbidden to him because he lost the battle, though they are clear to him; rather, he is agonized at hearing the clear sounds of triumph of the other side. However, they are "distant" literally in being far off and metaphorically in not being part of his experience; maybe defeat is the opposite of or "distant" from victory. In my opinion, the poem suggests that failure is painful, but also point out that only he who has suffered defeat can understand success, only those who know defeat can truly appreciate success. One is a real winner and cherish the success who can work hard and never give up through tough environment.
