WhomovedmycheeseTheStoryBehindTheStoryByKennethBlanchard,Ph.D.Iamthrilledtobetellingyou“thestorybehindthestoryof“WhoMovedMyCheese?”Becauseitmeansthebookhasnowbeenwritten,andisavailableforallofustoread,enjoyandsharewithothers.ThisissomethingI’vewantedtoseehappeneversinceIfirstheardSpencerJohnsontellhisgreat“Cheese”story,yearsago,beforewewroteourbookTheOneMinuteManagertogether.Irememberthinkingthenhowgoodthestorywasandhowhelpfulitwouldbetomefromthatmomenton.WhoMovedMyCheese? IsastoryaboutchangethattakesplaceinaMazewherefouramusingcharacterslookfor“Cheese”-cheesebeingametaphorforwhatwewanttohaveinlife,whetheritisajob,arelationship,money,abighouse,freedom,health,recognition,spiritualpeace,orevenanactivitylikejoggingorgolf.EachofushasourownideaofwhatCheeseis,andwepursueitbecausewebelieveitmakesushappy. Ifwegetit,weoftenbecomeattachedtoit. Andifweloseit,orit’stakenaway,itcanbetraumatic.The“Maze”inthestoryrepresentswhereyouspendtimelookingforwhatyouwant. Itcanbetheorganizationyouworkin,thecommunityyoulivein,ortherelationshipsyouhaveinyourlife.ItelltheCheesestorythatyouareabouttoreadinmytalksaroundtheworld,andoftenhearlaterfrompeopleaboutwhatadifferenceithasmadetothem.Believeitornot,thislittlestoryhasbeencreditedwithsavingcareers,marriagesandlives!Oneofthemanyreal-lifeexamplescomesfromCharlieJones,awell-respectedbroadcasterforNBC-TV,whorevealedthathearingthestoryof“WhoMovedMyCheese?”savedhiscareer. Hisjobasabroadcasterisunique,buttheprincipleshelearnedcanbeusedbyanyone.Here’swhathappened:CharliehadworkedhardandhaddoneagreatjobofbroadcastingTrackandFieldeventsatanearlierOlympicGames,sohewassurprisedandupsetwhenhisbosstoldhimhe’dbeenremovedfromtheseshowcaseeventsforthenextOlympicsandassignedtoSwimmingandDiving.Notknowingthesesportsaswell,hewasfrustrated. Hefeltunappreciatedandhebecameangry. Hesaidhefeltitwasn’tfair!Hisangerbegantoaffecteverythinghedid.Then,heheardthestoryof“WhoMovedMyCheese?”Afterthathesaidhelaughedathimselfandchangedhisattitude. Herealizedhisbosshadjust“movedhisCheese.”Soheadapted. Helearnedthetwonewsports,andintheprocess,foundthatdoingsomethingnewmadehimfeelyoung.Itwasn’tlongbeforehisbossrecognizedhisnewattitudeandenergy,andhesoongotbetterassignments. HewentontoenjoymoresuccessthaneverandwaslaterinductedintoProFootball’sHallofFame–Broadcaster’sAlley.That’sjustoneofthemanyreal-lifestories. I’veheardabouttheimpactthisstoryhashadonpeople-fromtheirworklifetotheirlovelife.I’msuchastrongbelieverinthepoweror“WhoMovedMyCheese?”thatIrecentlygaveacopyofanearlypre-publicationeditiontoeveryone(morethan200people)workingwithourcompany.Why?Becauselikeeverycompanythatwantstonotonlysurviveinthefuturebutstaycompetitive,BlanchardTraining&Developmentisconstantlychanging. Theykeepmovingour“cheese.’ Whileinthepastwemayhavewantedloyalemployees,todayweneedflexiblepeoplewhoarenotpossessiveabout“thewaythingsaredonearoundhere.’Andyet,asyouknow,livinginconstantwhitewaterwiththechangesoccurringallthetimeatworkorinlifecanbestressful,unlesspeoplehaveawayoflookingatchangethathelpsthemunderstandit. EntertheCheesestory.WhenItoldpeopleaboutthestoryandthentheygottoreadWhoMovedMyCheese?Youcouldalmostfeelthereleaseofnegativeenergybeginningtooccur. PersonafterpersonfromeverydepartmentwentoutoftheirwaytothankmefortheBookandtoldmehowhelpfulithadbeentothemalreadyinseeingthechangesgoingoninourcompanyinadifferentlight. Believeme,thisbriefparabletakeslittletimetoreadbutitsimpactcanbeprofound.Asyouturnthepages,youwillfindthreesectionsinthisbook.Inthefirst,AGathering,formerclassmatestalkataclassreunionabouttryingtodealwiththechangeshappeningintheirlives. ThesecondsectionisTheStoryOfWhoMovedMyCheese?thecoreofthebook.Inthethirdsection,ADiscussion,peoplediscusswhatTheStorymeanttothemandhowtheyaregoingtouseitintheirworkandintheirlives.Somereadersofthisbook’searlymanuscriptpreferredtostopattheendofTheStory,withoutreadingfurther,andinterpretitsmeaningforthemselves.OthersenjoyedreadingADiscussionthatfollowsbecauseitstimulatedtheirthinkingabouthowtheymightapplywhatthey’dlearnedtotheirownsituation.Inanycase,Ihopeeachtimeyoure-readWhoMovedMyCheese? Youwillfindsomethingnewandusefulinit,asIdo,andthatitwillhelpyoudealwithchangeandbringyousuccess,whateveryoudecidesuccessisforyou.IhopeyouenjoywhatyoudiscoverandIwishyouwell. Remember:MovewiththeCheese!KenBlanchardSanDiego,1998.AGatheringChicagoOnesunnySundayinChicago,severalformerclassmatesgatheredforlunch,havingattendedtheirhighschoolreunionthenightbefore. Theywantedtohearmoreaboutwhatwashappeningineachother’slives. Afteragooddealofkidding,andagoodmeal,theysettledintoaninterestingconversation.Angela,whohadbeenoneofthemostpopularpeopleintheclass,said,“LifesureturnedoutdifferentlythanIthoughtitwouldwhenwewereinschool. Alothaschanged.”“Itcertainlyhas,“Nathanechoed.Theyknewhehadgoneintohisfamily’sbusiness,whichhadoperatedprettymuchthesameandhadbeenapartofthelocalcommunityforaslongastheycouldremember. So,theyweresurprisedwhenheseemedconcerned. Heasked,“But,haveyounoticedhowwedon’twanttochangewhenthingschange?”Carlossaid,“Iguessweresistchangingbecausewe’reafraidofchange.”“Carlos,youwereCaptainofthefootballteam,”Jessicasaid. “IneverthoughtI’dhearyousayanythingaboutbeingafraid!”Theyalllaughedastheyrealizedthatalthoughtheyhadgoneoffindifferentdirections-fromworkingathometomanagingcompanies-theywereexperiencingsimilarfeelings.Everyonewastryingtocopewiththeunexpectedchangesthatwerehappeningtotheminrecentyears. Andmostadmittedthattheydidnotknowagoodwaytohandlethem.ThenMichaelsaid,“Iusedtobeafraidofchange. Whenabigchangecamealonginourbusiness,wedidn’tknowwhattodo. Sowedidn’tdoanythingdifferentlyandwealmostlostit.“Thatis,”hecontinued,“untilIheardafunnylittlestorythatchangedeverything.”“Howso?”Nathanasked.“Well,thestoryalteredthewayIlookedatchange,andafterthat,thingsquicklyimprovedforme–atworkandinmylife.“Then-Ipassedthestoryontosomepeopleinourcompanyandtheypasseditontoothers,andsoonourbusinessdidmuchbetter,becausewealladaptedtochangebetter. Andlikeme,manypeoplesaidithelpedthemintheirpersonallives.”“What’sthestory?”Angelaasked.“It’scalled,‘WhoMovedMyCheese?”Thegrouplaughed.“IthinkIlikeitalready,”Carlossaid.“Wouldyoutellusthestory?”“Sure,”Michaelreplied.“I’dbehappyto-Itdoesn’ttakelong.”Andsohebegan.Once,longagoinalandfaraway,therelivedfourlittlecharacterswhoranthroughamazelookingforcheesetonourishthemandmakethemhappy.Twoweremicenamed“Sniff”and“Scurry”andtwowerelittlepeople–beingswhowereassmallasmicebutwholookedandactedalotlikepeopletoday. Theirnameswere“Hem”and“Haw.”Duetotheirsmallsize,itwouldbeeasynottonoticewhatthefourofthemweredoing. Butifyoulookedcloselyenough,youcoulddiscoverthemostamazingthings!Everydaythemiceandthelittlepeoplespenttimeinthemazelookingfortheirownspecialcheese.Themice,SniffandScurry,possessingonlysimplerodentbrains,butgoodinstincts,searchingforthehardnibblingcheesetheylike,asmiceoftendo.Thetwolittlepeople,HemandHow,usedtheirbrains,filledwithmanybeliefs,tosearchforaverydifferentkindofcheese-withaCapitalC-whichtheybelievedwouldmakethemfeelhappyandsuccessful.Asdifferentasthemiceandlittlepeoplewere,theysharedsomethingincommon;everymorning,theyeachputontheirjoggingsuitsandrunningshoes,lefttheirlittlehomes,andracedoutintothemazelookingfortheirfavoritecheese.Themazewasalabyrinthofcorridorsandchambers,somecontainingdeliciouscheese. Buttherewerealsodarkcornersandblindalleysleadingnowhere. Itwasaneasyplaceforanyonetogetlost.However,forthosewhofoundtheirway,themazeheldsecretsthatletthemenjoyabetterlife. Themice,SniffandScurry,usedthesimple,butinefficient,trial–and-errormethodoffindingcheese. Theyrandownonecorridorandifitprovedempty,theyturnedandrandownanother.Sniffwouldsmelloutthegeneraldirectionofthecheese,usinghisgreatnose,andScurrywouldraceahead.  Theygotlost,asyoumightexpect,wentoffinthewrongdirectionandoftenbumpedintowalls.However,thetwolittlepeople,HemandHaw,usedadifferentmethodthatreliedontheirabilitytothinkandlearnfromtheirpastexperiences,although,theywouldsometimesgetconfusedbytheirbeliefsandemotions.Eventuallyintheirownway,theyalldiscoveredwhattheywerelookingfor–theyeachfoundtheirownkindofcheeseonedayattheendofoneofthecorridorsinCheeseStationC.Everymorningafterthat,themicethelittlepeopledressedintheirrunninggearandheadedovertoCheeseStationC. Itwasn’tlongbeforetheyeachestablishedtheirownroutine.SniffandScurrycontinuedtowakeearlyeverydayandracethroughthemaze,alwaysfollowingthesameroute.Whentheyarrivedattheirdestination,themicetookofftheirrunningshoes,tiedthemtogetherandhungthemaroundtheirnecks–sotheycouldgettothemquicklywhenevertheyneededthemagain. Thentheyenjoyedthecheese.InthebeginningHemandHawalsoracedtowardCheeseStationCeverymorningtoenjoythetastynewmorselsthatawaitedthem.Butafterawhile,adifferentroutinesetinforthelittlepeople.HemandHawawokeeachdayalittlelater,dressedalittleslower,andwalkedtoCheeseStationC. Afterall,theyknewwheretheCheesewasnowandhowtogetthere.TheyhadnoideawheretheCheesecamefrom,orwhoputitthere. Theyhunguptheirjoggingsuits,putawaytheirrunningshoesandputontheirslippers. TheywerebecomingverycomfortablenowthattheyhadfoundtheCheese.“Thisisgreat,”Hemsaid. “There’senoughCheeseheretolastusforever.” Thelittlepeoplefelthappyandsuccessful,andthoughttheywerenowsecure.Itwasn’tlongbeforeHemandHawregardedtheCheesetheyfoundatCheeseStationCastheircheese. ItwassuchalargestoreofCheesethattheyeventuallymovedtheirhomestobeclosertoit,andbuiltasociallifearoundit.Tomakethemselvesfeelmoreathome,HemandHawdecoratedthewallssayingsandevendrewpicturesofCheesearoundthemwhichmadethemsmile.Oneread”SometimesHemandHawwouldtaketheirfriendsbytoseetheirpileofCheeseatCheeseStationC,andpointtoitwithpride,saying“PrettyniceCheese,huh?”Sometimestheyshareditwiththeirfriendsandsometimestheydidn’t.“WedeservethisCheese,”Hemsaid. “Wecertainlyhadtoworklongandhardenoughtofindit.”Hepickedupanicefreshpieceandateit.Afterwards,Hemfellasleep,asheoftendid.Everynightthelittlepeoplewouldwaddlehome,fullofCheese,andeverymorningtheywouldconfidentlyreturnforhome.Thiswentonforquitesometime.AfterawhileHem’sandHaw’sconfidencegrewintoarrogance. Soontheybecamesocomfortabletheydidn’tevennoticewhatwashappening.Astimewenton,SniffandScurrycontinuedtheirroutine. TheyarrivedearlyeachmorningandsniffedandscratchedandscurriedaroundCheeseStationC,inspectingtheareatoseeittherehadbeenanychangesfromthedaybefore. Thentheywouldsitdowntonibbleonthecheese.OnemorningtheyarrivedatCheeseStationCanddiscoveredtherewerenocheese.Theyweren’tsurprised. SinceSniffandScurryhadnoticedthesupplyofcheesehadbeengettingsmallereveryday,theywerepreparedfortheinevitableandknewinstinctivelywhattodo.Theylookedateachother,removedtherunningshoestheyhadtiedtogetherandhungconvenientlyaroundtheirnecks,putthemontheirfeetandlacedthemup.Themicedidnotoveranalyzethings. Andtheywerenotburdenedwithmanycomplexbeliefs.Tothemice,theproblemandtheanswerwerebothsimple. ThesituationatCheesestationChadchanged. So,SniffandScurrydecidedtochange.Theybothlookedoutintothemaze.ThenSniffliftedhisnose,sniffed,andnoddedtoScurry,whotookoffrunningthroughthemazewhileSnifffollowedasfastashecould.TheywerequicklyoffinsearchofNewCheese.Laterthatsameday,HemandHawarrivedatCheeseStationC. Theyhadnotbeenpayingattentiontothesmallchangesthathadbeentakingplaceeachday,sotheytookitforgrantedtheirCheesewouldbethere.Theywereunpreparedforwhattheyfound. “What?NoCheese?”Hemyelled. Hecontinuedyelling,“NoCheese?NoCheese?”asthoughifheshoutedloudenoughsomeonewouldputitback.“WhomovedmyCheese?”hehollered.Finally,heputhishandsonhiships,hisfaceturnedred,andhescreamedatthetopofhisvoice,“It’snotfair!”Hawjustshookhisheadindisbelief. He,toohadcountedonfindingCheeseatCheeseStationC. Hestoodthereforalongtime,frozenwithshock. Hewasjustnotreadyforthis.Hemwasyellingsomething,butHawdidn’twanttohearit. Hedidn’twanttodealwithwhatwasfacinghim,sohejusttunedeverythingout.Thelittlepeople’sbehaviorwasnotveryattractiveorproductivebutitwasunderstandable.FindingCheesewasn’teasy,anditmeangreatdealmoretothelittlepeoplethanjusthavingenoughofittoeateveryday.FindingCheesewasthelittlepeople’swayofgettingwhattheythoughttheyneededtobehappy. TheyhadtheirownideasofwhatCheesemeanttothem,dependingontheirtaste.Forsome,findingCheesewashavingmaterialthings. Forothersitwasenjoyinggoodhealth,ordevelopingaspiritualsenseofwell-being.ForHaw,Cheesejustmeantfeelingsafe,havinglovingfamilysomedayandlivinginacozycottageonCheddarLane.ToHem,CheesewasbecomingABigCheeseinchargeofothersandowningabighouseatopCamembertHill.BecauseCheesewasimportanttothem,thetwolittlepeoplespentalongtimetryingtodecidewhattodo. AlltheycouldthinkofwastokeeplookingaroundCheeselessStationCtoseeiftheCheesewasreallygone.WhileSniffandScurryhadquicklymovedon,HemandHawcontinuedtohemandhaw.Theyrantedandravedattheinjusticeofitall. Hawstartedtogetdepressed. WhatwouldhappeniftheCheesewasn’ttheretomorrow? HehasmadefutureplansbasedonthisCheese.Thelittlepeoplecouldn’tbelieveit. Howcouldthishavehappened?Noonehadwarnedthem. Itwasn’tright. Itwasnotthewaythingsweresupposedtobe.HemandHawwenthomethatnighthungryanddiscouraged. Butbeforetheyleft,Hawwroteonthewall:TheMoreImportantYourCheeseIsToYouTheMoreYouWantToHoldOnToIt.ThenextdayHemandHawlefttheirhomes,andreturnedtoCheeseStationCagain,wheretheystillexpected,somehow,tofindtheirCheese.Thesituationhadn’tchanged,theCheesewasnolongerthere. Thelittlepeopledidn’tknowwhattodo. HemandHawjuststoodthere,immobilizedliketwostatues.Hawshuthiseyesastightashecouldandputhishandsoverhisears. Hejustwantedtoblockeverythingout. Hedidn’twanttoknowtheCheesesupplyhadgraduallybeengettingsmaller. Hebelievedithadbeenmovedallofasudden.Hemanalyzedthesituationoverandoverandeventuallyhiscomplicatedbrainwithitshugebeliefsystemtookhold. “Whydidtheydothistome?”hedemanded. “What’sreallygoingonhere?”Finally,Hawopenedhiseyes,lookedaroundandsaid,“Bytheway,whereareSniffandScurry?Doyouthinktheyknowsomethingwedon’t?”Hemscoffed,“Whatwouldtheyknow?”HemContinued,“They’rejustsimplemice.Theyjustrespondtowhathappens. We’relittlepeople. We’respecial. Weshouldbeabletofigurethisout. And,besides,wedeservebetter.“Thisshouldnothappentous,orifitdoes,weshouldatleastgetsomebenefits.”“Whyshouldwegetbenefits?”Hawasked.“Becausewe’reentitled,”Hemclaimed.“Entitledtowhat?”Hemwantedtoknow.“We’reentitledtoourCheese.”“Why?”Hawasked.“Because,wedidn’tcausethisproblem,“Hemsaid.“Somebodyelsedidthisandweshouldgetsomethingoutofit.”Hawsuggested,“MaybeweshouldstopanalyzingthesituationsomuchandgetgoingandfindsomeNewCheese.”“Ohno,”Hemargued. “I’mgoingtogettothebottomofthis.”WhileHemandHawwerestilltryingtodecidewhattodo,SniffandScurrywerealreadywellontheirway. Theywentfartherintothemaze,upanddowncorridors,lookingforcheeseineveryCheeseStationtheycouldfind.Theydidn’tthinkofanythingelsebutfindingNewCheese.Theydidn’tfindanyforsometimeuntiltheyfinallywentintoanareaofthemazewheretheyhadneverbeenbefore:CheeseStationN.Theysquealedwithdelight. Theyfoundwhattheyhadbeenlookingfor:agreatsupplyofNewCheese.Theycouldhardlybelievetheireyes. Itwasthebiggeststoreofcheesethemicehadeverseen.Inthemeantime,HemandHawwerestillbackinCheeseStationCevaluatingtheirsituation. Theywerenowsuff
