China—US relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world.Before China and the United States established diplomatic ties,the two countries often found themselves to be changing accusations and abuses.But that didn’t settle anything .Since the establishment of diplomatic ties,particularly since China’s accession to the WTO,the exchanges between China and the United States have become increasingly close and we have carried out frequent dialogues of various forms at all levels.While we did have a fair amount of bitter argument ,both of us had actually benefited from such exchanges.What has happened shows that to maintain long—term dialogue between our two big countries not only benefits the Chinese and American people,but also serves peace and development of the world. 2.The Summer Palace is regarded as the best—preserved imperial garden in the world,and is the largest of its kind in modern—day China.Situated in the northwestern outskirts of Beijing,the palace occupies an area of 290 hectares and consists mainly of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lack.In December 1998,UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List.It declared the Summer Palace an “outstanding expression of the creative art of Chinese Landscape Garden Design,incorporation the works of humankind and nature in a harmonious whole. 3.The Tang Dynasty,with its capital at Chang’an(present—day Xi’an),which at the time was the most populous city in the world,is generally regarded as a high point in Chinese civilization—equal to ,or surpassing that of ,the earlier Han Dynasty—a golden age of cosmopolitan culture .Its territory,acquired through the military thcampaigns of its early rulers,rivaled that of the Han Dynasty.In two censuses of the 7 thand 8 centuries ,the Tang records estimated the population by number of registered households at about 500 million people. 4.This year marks the tenth anniversary of China’s accession to the WTO.During the decade,China’s average tariff level has dropped from 15.3 percent to 9.8 percent,which has reached or surpassed the WTO requirements for developing countries.In recent years ,China has developed its economy with focus on stabilizing prices ,adjusting the economic structure ,ensuring people’s well—being ,and promoting harmony.China maintains a balance between achieving steady and fast economic growth,adjusting the economic structure and managing inflation expectation.Continued steady and fast growth in China will serve the interest of global economic growth. 5.A key focus is expansion of domestic demand.Here China enjoys one great advantage :its 1.3bn people are keen to work hand in pursuit of a better life and make up a huge domestic market.We will expand consumer demand through initiatives such as the promotion of the IT sector through the expansion of broadband and 4G licences.While focusing on consumption,we will keep a reasonable scale of investment with priority given to energy conservation,environmental protection,railway projects in the central and western regions,and municipal facilities. 6.The phrase "positive energy"topped the list of China's buzzwords in 2012.The popularity of the phrase is attributed to the book,"Rip It Up",written by the British psychologist Richard Wiseman.The phrase"positive energy" has acquired extra levels of meaning in China today.All positive,sound,inspiring,purportive,hopeful and loving people and things are considered "positive energy." Positive energy is meant to give people confidence and hope,encourage people to love their country,society and life,as well as to pursue nice things. 7. China is among the latecomers to the Internet.However,China's Internet is developing rapidly.It has two distinctive features: a huge Internet population and a huge number of websites.With an Internet penetration rate of 44.1 percent,China has almost 600million Internet users.And the number is still on the rise.The respective numbers of micro bloggers and WeChat users have both exceed 300 million.Five Chinese Websites,Baidu.com.QQ.com,Taobao.com,Sina.com.cn and Sohu.com,are listed in the Top 20 Most Popular Websites in the Word in 2013.The Internet is a new platform for many Chinese entrepreneurs to realize their dreams. 8.The tradition of eating pumpkin during Mid—Autumn Festival started with poor people living south of the Yangtze River.Legend has it that a long time ago,a girl named Huang Hua who came from a poor family,lived with her gravely ill parents who were unable to feed and clothe themselves.On August 15 on the lunar calendar of one year,she took home two pumpkins and prepared them for her parents,whose health was full restored after eating the pumpkin on Mid—Autumn Festival night is believed to bring people good health. 9.Ningxia is the only provincial-level Hui autonomous region in China,located at the central span of the new Eurasian Land Bridge in China with a vantage position to connect the eastern,western,southern and northern parts of the country and competitive edges in energy,agriculture and tourism.Ningxia is also blessed with rich resources,with the proved coal reserve ranking the sixth nation-wide,per capita coal production the third,and per capita electricity production the first.The unique and competitive agricultural products as goji berry and its products,wine,halal beef and mutton and cashmere are widely acclaimed both at home and abroad.Ningxia is the country's important energy/chemical industry base,and a unique tourism destination. 10.Sichuan is a place that has long been reputed as the “Land of Abundance”in China .Over the years,the hardworking and talented people of Sichuan have built a beautiful homeland.Yet they have also gone through many hardships.Just over a month ago,on 20 April,a 7.0—magnitude earthquake struck Lushan County,causing heavy loss of life and property.Thanks to support and assistance from the whole nation,the people of Sichuan have scored a decisive victory in resetting the earthquake victims.Five years ago,on 12 May 2008,an even more devastating earthquake measuring 8.0 on Richter scale struck Wenchuan County.In the wake of the earthquake ,through concerted efforts of entire country,we managed to complete the post—quake reconstruction programs within three years. 11.In China,as with any other countries,there are many things you can not do when eating.Knowing them will help you better involve yourself into the culture.Firstly,don't play with your chopsticks.Pointing at a particular thing with them,or drumming them on table,for example,suggests that the cooking is taking too long.It would probably offend your host.Secondly,when cheering with drinking up the drinks,be sure that your glass is lower than that of the senior members.It implys that you are not equal on the age and shows your respect. 12.Siheyuan is a kind of residence that offers space,comfort and quiet privacy.It is also good for security as well as protection against dust and storms.A standard Siheyuan usually consists of houses on its four sides.The elder generation lives in the main house,the younger generation lives in the side houses,and the south house is the sitting room or study.The Siheyuan's gate is at the southeastern corner according to the traditional concepts of the five elements.Normally there is a screen-wall inside the gate so that outsiders cannot see directly into the courtyard and it is also believed to protect the house from evil spirits.
