高中暑假口语课程表 Syllabus Instructor: Samuel Jackson Course Name: Oral English Summer Intensive Course Level: High School Course Description: OESI is designed for ESL students who have a good base in the English language and wish to further their oral English skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Students will learn to properly pronounce target words and phrases in the same manner as a native English speaker. 2. Students will learn to write formally and informally according to modern Western standards. 3. Students will gain knowledge of world cultures and customs and obtain the ability to communicate at an international level. 4. Students will learn the proper tone and cadence of Modern Standard American English. Required Materials: 1. A pen or pencil 2. A binder or folder with pockets to keep all class handouts 3. A notebook for note taking Attendance Policy: 1. No student may fail to attend, or be tardy to, more than two classes or face expulsion. 2. The school must be notified at least 24 hours in advance of any and all absences. 3. In case of an absence, students are required to make-up all work given in the unattended class. Method of Evaluation: Students’ final grades will be determined according to their scores on homework assignments and on the end-of-term exam. Homework accounts for 40% of a student’s grade; the end-of-term exam accounts for 60%. 1Grade values: 90-100=A; 80-89=B; 70-79=C; 60-69=D; less than 60=F 1 Note: a grade of “F” is a failure. Students who fail a class are required to pursue further studies and retake their exam with a passing grade before they are allowed to continue as students at New Horizon English. Syllabus Course Syllabus Monday Greetings and Introductions None 6 July 2009 Past tense: describing occurrences and Tuesday habitual actions in the past 1-A assigned 7 July 2009 Foundations of Western culture: Wednesday traditional stories mythology 1-B assigned 8 July 2009 Subjunctive tense: expressing opinions, Thursday desires and wishes 1-A due 9 July 2009 Culture: holidays, vacations and related Friday vocabulary. 2-A assigned 10 July 2009 Speech: Intonation and its effect on word Monday meaning. 2-A due 13 July 2009 Tuesday Culture: Social customs 1 3-A assigned 14 July 2009 Music: understanding the West through 1-B due Wednesday contemporary music 15 July 2009 2-B assigned Thursday Culture: Social customs 2 3-A due 16 July 2009 Idioms: Use of euphemisms in everyday Friday speech and music. 4-A assigned 17 July 2009 Small Talk: Applying idioms in casual Monday conversations 4-A due 20 July 2009 Tuesday Review None 21 July 2009 Wednesday Test prep: writing an essay 3-B due 22 July 2009 Thursday Exam None 23 July 2009 Friday Parent Day None 24 July 2009 This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
