Let’s Make a Difference to the World
What can make a difference to the world? And just as importantly, who can make a difference to the world? Let me tell you, I may still be young but I already know that you and I can make a positive difference to the world. I believe kindness, dedication and encouragement can make the world a better place for you, me and everyone who wants to have a better life.
So, listen now while I tell you of my experiences in the U.S. which show that kindness, dedication and encouragement can make my world and your world a great place to be.
I will always remember my first day arriving in the U.S. My dad and I were struggling to move a pile of furniture with a small handcart. A minibus stopped and a young African American man got out, smiled and asked, “Do you need any help?” He helped us there and then to move our furniture in his minibus to our apartment. He asked for nothing in return. His smile brought sunshine to me and my family’s early days in this big, new country. Yes, kindness can make a difference to the world.
I also remember that it was approximately a 20 minute walk to my school. Every day I went to school all by myself. Was it safe? Certainly! Why? Volunteers stood on each road intersection on the routes to school to protect us. It didn’t matter if it was sunny, raining or snowing – they were always there- looking after me and my schoolmates. And, let me inform you that the winters in Wisconsin lasted for six months with extreme cold. Even now, I can recall thinking how dedicated the volunteers were getting up early every day to make sure that we got to school safely. Yes, dedication can make a difference to this world.
Finally, I can recall that during the first month at my new school in the U.S. I was having problems understanding the Social Studies classes. It was so difficult I was going to give up the classes. Well, my teacher Miss Masugar found out I was having problems and she said “Trust yourself. You can do it! I’m here whenever you need help.” With her encouragement and instruction, I worked hard and kept up with my classmates in Social Studies. Yes, encouragement can make a difference to the world.
Maybe you think it’s impossible for ordinary people to make a difference to the world. The truth is that everyone can. All of us can. Kindness, dedication and encouragement are given by people to help people. If you do something with the intention of “doing good”, if you treat the world with kindness, dedication and encouragement, you are making a great difference to the world.
