自1997年《哈利·波特与魔法石》出版发行以来,《哈利·波特》系列小说迅速风
靡全世界,波特狂热席卷全球,引发一股读
书

并获得多项奖项。其作者英国女作家J.K.Rowling也凭借该系列小说从一个贫困的单
亲母亲成为首位仅仅依靠写作就成为亿万富翁的女作家,并受到英国皇室的嘉奖。这一
现象引起了专家、学者们的广泛关注,并从各个方面对小说进行了研究和探讨,但对文
学作品本身的文体特征方面的研究依然十分缺乏。
文学文体学的研究目的是探索作者如何通过选择合适的语言和恰当的修辞手法来

式,也使得读者能够更好得理解文学作品的主题意义和思想内涵。而语料库语言学则是
在计算机的帮助下研究小说中独有的语言特征。因此借助于语料库语言学的辅助手段来
研究文学作品的文体特征,可以为以往完全主观的文学批评提供数据支持,使研究者能
够更科学地观察、描述、分析和解释文学作品中的主客观世界,更主动地参与到文学作
品的再创作中去,同时也使得研究结果更加客观、准确及科学。
本文以语料库语言学方法为辅对《哈利·波特》系列小说的整体语言特征、主要情
节和主题、小说的主要人物以及部分修辞手法等文体特征进行了详细分析。通过分析表
明:第一,该系列小说中词语密度低,句子较短,难度不高,部分说明小说受到全球各
个年龄段人们喜爱的原因;第二,在主题方面,该系列小说既继承了英国文学传统,同
时又反映了当代社会和文化中的现实问题;第三,在情节描写和人物刻画方面深刻反映
了儿童本性,为中国儿童文学作品的写作提供了优秀榜样;最后,作者创造了许多新词
汇并使用了大量生动、形象的明喻。另外,本文在研究了《哈利·波特》系列小说的文
体特征的同时也证实了语料库语言学方法在辅助文体分析尤其是情节分析方面起到了
很大的作用。文学文体学和语料库语言学的结合,不仅可以增强我们对语言选择的敏感
度,而且能够提高我们对文学作品的鉴赏能力。如果能够将这种分析方法运用于课堂中,
会使得学生更好得理解、分析和鉴赏文学作品。

SinceHarryPotterandthePhilosopher'sStonewaspublishedin1997,HarryPotterserieshave
pervadedthewholeworldquickly,settingoffPotter-maniaandallupsurgeofstudyovertheworld.This
serieshaveeverbeenatthetopofthebest-sellerlistsforseveraltimesandmadetheauthorJ.ICRowling
receivenumerousawards.Itsauthor,theBritishwriterJ.kRowling,becamethefirstbillionairewoman
writerfromapoorsinglemotheronlybywritingandwasconferredtheBritishroyalfamily’Saward.This
phenomenonhasattractedexpertsandscholars’attention,SOtheystudiedtheseriesfromvariousaspects.
ButtheresearchonthestylisticfeaturesofHarryPotterseriesisstillrare.
Literarystylisticsexploreshowtheauthorcreatedthethematicsignificanceandaestheticvaluesof
literaryworksbyadoptingproperlanguageandappropriaterhetoricalmethods,thusprovidingthe
interpretationandappreciationwithamoreobjectivemethodandenablingreaderstohavea better
understandingofliteraryworks.AndCorpuslinguisticsstudiesthenovel’Suniquelanguagefeatureswith
thehelpofthecomputer.Therefore,studyfromtheperspectiveofstylisticswiththecorpus.basedmethod
couldbemoreobjectiveowingtothedata-support,andmakeresearchersobserve,describe,analyzeand
interprettheobjectiveandsubjectiveworldsofliteraryworksscientifically.Itcallalsomakereaders
activelyparticipateintherecreationoftheworksandhaveabetterunderstandingofthestory.Meanwhile,
itCallmaketheresultmoreobjective,accurateandscientific.
Inthisthesis,thewriteranalyzedthestylisticfeaturesofHarryPotterseriesindetailwiththe
corpus-basedmethod,includinggeneralinformationofthelanguage,themainplotsandthemes,the
depictionofmaincharactersaswellassomerhetoricalmethods.Therefore,theresearchfindingswere
arrived.Firstly,intheserieslexicaldensityislowandsentencesareshort,which,tosomeextent,illustrates
thepopularityoftheseries.Secondly,intermsofthetheme,theseriesnotonlyinherittheBritishliterary
tradition,butalsoreflectcontemporarysocialandculturalproblems.Thirdly,thedescriptionofplotsand
charactersreflectschildren’8natureandsetsagoodexampletothewritingofChinesechildren’Sliterature.
Finally,inordertomaketheimaginarywizardingworldvivid,theauthorinventednumerousnewwords
andemployeda lotofimpressivesimiles.Inaddition,thisthesisalsoverifiestheimportantroleofthe

thecenturies.AstudyaboutthereadingratesshowedthatintheUSadultreadingrotesdroppedby10
percentagepointsinthepastdecade,especiallyforthose18to24.MoreandMorechildrenarereadingnot
forpleasureaswell.AccordingtothedatagivenbytheNationalCenterforEducationalStatistics,the
numberof17一year-oldchildrenreportedneverorhardlyevel-readingforpleasurerosefrom9percentin
1987to19percentin2007.①Manypeopleattributedthisphenomenontothevogueofipods,E-mail,
onlinechatsandvideogames.
ButovernightthisphenomenonWaschangedbyHarryPotterseries,whichhavebeenpopularallOVer
theworldsince1997whenthefirstbookHarryPotterandSorcerer'sStoneWaspublished.Adultsand
childrenreadtogether,talkaboutthestoryandpredictwhatwillhappennext.Sointhenewcentury,
readingHarryPotterbecomesanewvogueofthewholeworld.Thepublicationofeverybookoftheseries
hasevercausedthepanicbuying.Ithasevenbecomearewardforagoodbehaviorinthesch001.Andit

Twotoolswillbeemployedinthisthesis.OneisWordsmith,whichcouldbeusedtomakewordlist,
extractkeywords,retrieveplot-diagramandcomputeconcordanceinlanguageanalysis.Itcouldcompute
somegeneralstatisticalcharacteristicsofthegiventextaswell,includingbytes,tokens,type,type/token

Science(SPSS).WiththehelpofSPSS,datacouldbesortedoutfortheaimofobservingandcheckedfor
interpretation.Usingthesetwotools,theserieswillbeanalyzedtoexplorenotonlyitslanguagefeatures
andplot,butthelinguisticcharacteristicsindescriptionsystematically.

Thisthesisisdividedintofivechapters.
Chapter1 introducestheworldwidepopularityofHarryPotterseries,thesignificanceofthepresent
study,andtheaim,researchquestionsandmethodologyofthestudy.
Chapter2ismainlyaboutthegeneralintroductionoftheauthorJ.K.Rowlingandtheseriesandthe
previousresearchabroadandathomeaswell.Inthischapter,thenecessityofstud弭ngHarryPotterseries
fromtheperspectiveofstylisticswitllthecorpus-basedapproachismentioned.
Chapter3offersthetheoretical助mework,includingtheconceptsofstyleandstylistics,the
relationshipbetweencorpuslinguisticsandstylistics,theadvantagesofthecorpus-basedapproachandthe
researchlevelsofcorpus—basedstylisticanalysis.
Chapter4,thefocusofthisthesis,isaboutlinguisticfeatures,plotandthemeanalysis,character
analysisandrhetoricanalysisoftheseriesfromtheperspectiveofstylistics、航mthecorpus-based
