Section B Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices markedA.,B.,C. andD.. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Some people believe that international sports creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years tile Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the games were also mined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the volleyball final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the match, the loser objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponent's victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said, "This wasn't volleyball and the International Volleyball Federation is finished." The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(禁 赛) of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball into the basket. It was the first time the U.S.A. had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals. Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympic there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism. 1、 According to the passage, recent Olympic Games have ______. A. created goodwill between the nations B. bred only false national pride C. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred D. barely showed any international friendship 2、 What can be inferred from the words of the manager of silver-medalist? A. There should be no more volleyball matches organized by the Federation. B. His team will not be allowed to take part in international games in the future. C. Volleyball and International Volleyball Federation are both mined by that unfair decisions. D. The International Volleyball Federation should be dismissed. 3、 The basketball example given in the third paragraph implies that ______. A. too much emphasis on the result of game was displayed in the incident B. the American team was fight in rejecting the silver medals C. the announcement to prolong the match was wrong D. the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision 4、 What can we conclude from the passage? A. International contests are liable for misunderstanding between nations. B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games. C. Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of Olympic Games. D. The organization of the Olympic Games has room for improvement. 5、 The word "patriotism" (Line 5, Para. 4) is closest in meaning to ______. A. fierce competition B. love for one's country C. challenge to the judge's decision D. thirst for prizes in international contests Passage Two When anti-globalization protesters took to the streets of Washington last weekend, they blamed globalization for everything from hunger to the destruction of home-grown cultures. And globalization meant the United States. The critics call it Coca- Colonization, and French sheep farmer Jose Bove has become a cult (狂热分子) figure since destroying a McDonald's restaurant in 1999. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, globalization is neither homogenizing (使 同化) nor Americanizing the cultures of the world. To understand why not, we have to step back and put the current period in a larger historical perspective. Although they are related, the long-term historical trends of globalization and modernization are not the same. While modernization has produced some common traits, such as large cities, factories and mass communications, local cultures have by no means been erased. The appearance of similar institutions in response to similar problems is not surprising, but it does not lead to homogeneity. In the first half of the 20th century, for example, there were some similarities among the industrial societies of Britain, Germany, America and Japan, but there were even more important differences. When China, India and Brazil complete their current processes of industrialization and modernization, we should not expect them to be exact copies of Japan, Germany or the United States. Take the current information revolution. The United States is at the forefront of this great movement of change, so the uniform social and cultural habits produced by television viewing or Internet use, for instance, are often attributed to Americanization. But correlation is not cause. Since the United States does exist and is at the leading edge of the information revolution, there is a degree of Americanization at present, but it's likely to decrease over the course of the 21st century as technology spreads and local cultures modernize in their own ways. Historical proof that globalization does not necessarily mean homogenization can be seen in the case of Japan. In the mid-19th century, it became the first Asian country to embrace globalization and to borrow successfully from the world without losing its uniqueness. Following the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Japan searched broadly for tools and innovations that would allow it to become a major power rather than a victim of Western imperialism. The lesson that Japan has to teach the rest of the world is that even a century and a half of openness to global trends does not necessarily assure destruction of a country's cultural identity. 6、 The author's main purpose in writing this passage is to _____. A. criticize extreme and violent actions B. report the progress of some new events C. tell his readers not to be afraid of globalization D. recall a certain period of American history 7、 The author mentions world history to prove that modernization ______. A. is one of the long-term historical trends B. does not result in homogeneity of local cultures C. is somewhat related to globalization D. has shaped different waits in industrial countries 8、 The author admits that a degree of Americanization does exist because ______. A. local cultures are gradually weakened over the course of the 21st century B. it's a long-term historical trend of the world C. the Internet and TV promote the spread of American social and cultural habits D. industrial societies are almost exact copies of the United States 9、 Japan is mentioned in the passage to show that _____. A. openness to globalization will not cost a nation's cultural identity B. the Meiji Restoration of 1868 was crucial in Japan's history C. it was the first Asian country to develop successfully D. tools and innovations would allow a country to become a major power 10、 From the passage we can conclude that the author is strongly in defense of ______. A. modernization C. information revolution B. Americanization D. globalization Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre, You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. While waiting for a friend in a Washington, D.C. hotel lobby and wanting to be both 11 and alone, I had seated myself in a solitary chair outside the normal stream of traffic. In such a setting most Americans follow a role, which can be stated as follows: as soon as a person stops or is seated in a public place, there balloons around him a small 12 of privacy which is considered 13 . Anyone who enters this zone and says there is intruding. As I waited in the 14 lobby, a stranger walked up to where I was sitting and stood close enough so that not only could I easily touch him but I could even hear him breathing, If the lobby had been crowed with people, I would have understood his 15 , but in empty lobby his presence made me very uncomfortable. Feeling annoyed by this intrusion, I moved my body in such a way as to communicate 16 . Strangely enough, instead of moving away, my actions seemed to encourage him, because he moved even closer. Fortunately, a group of people soon arrived whom my tormentor immediately joined. Their 17 explained his behavior, for I knew from both speech and 18 that they were Arabs. I have not been able to make this 19 identification by looking at him when he was alone because he was wearing American clothes. For the Arab, there is no such thing as 20 in public. Public means public. If A is standing on a street comer and B wants his spot, B is within his rights if be does what he can to make A uncomfortable enough to move. A. mannerism [I] desert B. crucial [J] deserved C. behavior [K] gestures D. intrusion [L] visible E. inviolate [M] visionary F. annoyance [N] anxiously G. specify [O] interfere [H] sphere Section B Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One The predictability of our mortality rates is something that has long puzzled social scientists. After all, there is no natural reason why 2,500 people should accidentally shoot themselves each year or why 7,000 should drown or 55,000 die in their cars. No one establishes a quota(配额) for each type of death. It just happens that they follow a consistent pattern year after year. A few years ago a Canadian psychologist named Gerald Wilde became interested in this phenomenon. He noticed that mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths throughout the Western world have remained oddly static throughout the whole of the century, despite all the technological advances and increases in safety standards that have happened in that time. Wilde developed an interesting theory called "risk homeostasis(自我平衡)". According to this theory, people instinctively live with a certain level of risk. When something is made safer, people will get around the measure in some way to reassert the original level of danger. If, for instance, they are required to wear seat belts, they will feel safer and thus will drive a little faster and a little more recklessly, thereby statistically canceling out the benefits that the seat belt confers. Other studies have shown that where an intersection is made safer. the accident rate invariably falls there but rises to a compensating level elsewhere along the same stretch of road. it appears, then, that we have an innate need for danger. In all events, it is becoming clearer and clearer to scientists that the factors influencing our lifespan are far more subtle and complex than had been previously thought. It now appears that if you wish to live a long life, it isn't simply a matter of adhering to certain precautions: eating the right foods, not smoking, driving with care. You must also have the fight attitude. Scientists at the Duke University Medical Center made a 15-year study of 500 persons' personalities and found, somewhat to their surprise, that people with a suspicious or mistrustful nature die prematurely far more often than people with a sunny disposition. Looking on the bright side, it seems, can add years to your life span. 21、 What social scientists have long felt puzzled about is ______. A. why a quota for each type of death has not come into being B. why the mortality rate can not be predicted C. why the death toll remains stable year after year D. why people lose their lives every year for this or that mason 22、 In Ins research, Gerald Wilde finds that technological advances and increases in safety standards ______. A. have achieved no effect in reducing the number of deaths B. have helped to solve the problem of so high death rate C. have oddly accounted for mortality rates in the past century D. have reduced mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths 23、 According to the theory of "risk homeostasis", some traffic accidents result from ______. A. our innate desire for risk C. our instinctive interest in speeding B. our fast and reckless driving D. our ignorance of seat belt benefits 24、 By saying "...statistically canceling out the benefits that the seat belt confers" (Lines 10, Para. 2), the author means that ______. A. deaths form wearing seat belts are the same as those from not wearing them B. wearing seat belts does not have any benefits from the statistic point of view C. deaths form other reasons counterbalance the benefits of wearing seat belts D. wearing seat belts does not necessarily reduce death from truffle accidents 25、 Which of the following may contribute to a longer life span? A. Eating the food low In fat and driving with great care. B. Cultivating an optimistic personality and never losing heart. C. Showing adequate suspicion to others. D. Looking on the bright side and developing a balanced level of risk. Passage Two In 1997, devotees of home electronics eagerly awaited the DVD player, a new device that could play movies without videotape, and with greater clarity. It caught on even faster than CD music players and within four years, DVD movies surpassed VHS tapes in sales. The DVD's success is just on example of a historic shift from analog to digital technologies. They began with computing and are now spreading to industries from banking to publishing. Products and services are shedding the limits of their physical form to become encoded information that never degrades, can be reproduced perfectly and distributed around the world in minutes, or less. Another example is photography: by the end of this year, tile number of images captured digitally each day is expected to surpass the number of images captured on film. With digital cameras and other devices linked to personal computers, we can collect vast amounts of data, which fortunately takes up little or no closet space. Today's average personal computer has a hard drive that can store 300 times more information than a decade ago. Technologies, such as broadband e-commerce, are expected to be the primary means of delivering entertainment and media by the end of this decade. Even life itself is increasingly digitized. The human genome(基因组), the recipe for our genetic makeup, has been mapped and encoded and researchers are harnessing the power of computing to accelerate the development, of new, lifesaving drugs. The implications of this broad, digital revolution are enormous, although they tend to be over-shadowed by the struggles of high-tech industries to recover from the go-go years of the 1990s. Those struggles are real, yet there are reasons for optimism about a return to robust economic growth and job creation in the next several years. The digital innovations(创新) of the past two decades continue to bear fruit, so stay tuned for good news--digitally, of course. 26、 Digital technologies really began to take form when ______. A. information was encoded C. it was used with photography B. DVD technology was introduced D. used in computing 27、 The example of photography is used to show ______. A. how digital technology has replaced traditional film B. how economical it is to use digital technology since it stores so much C. the enormous storage advantages of digital technology D. how digital technology has improved the quality of production 28、 The author implies that excitement over the digital revolution may be hindered by ______. A. die economic realities of its practicality B. robust economic growth C. economic problems of hi-tech companies D. ignorance of the technology 29、 By using the phrase "stay tuned for good news" (Line 5, Para. 3 ) the author wants us to ______. A. hope that the good news won't change B. expect more positive innovations C. wait for the situation to change for the better D. try and be more optimistic 30、 The passage is based on the author's ______. A. experience of the changes C. hope for changes B. admiration of the changes D. analysis of the changes 简答题强化训练 (一) Directions: In this part, there is a short passage with 5 questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Would-be language teachers everywhere have one thing in common: they all want some recognition of their professional status and skills, and a job. The former requirements is obviously important on a personal level, but it is vital if you are to have any chance of finding work. Ten years ago, the situation was very different. In virtually every developing country, and in many developed countries as well, being a native English speaker was enough to get you employed as an English teacher. Now employers will only look at teachers who have the knowledge, the skills and attitudes to teach English effectively. The result of this has been to raise non-native English teachers to the same status as their native counterparts(相对应的人)--some- thing they have always deserved but seldom enjoyed. Non-natives are now happy-- linguistic discrimination(语言上的歧视) is a thing of the past. As ongoing research project, funded by the University of Cambridge, asked a sample of teachers, teacher educators and employers in more than 40 countries whether they regard the native/non-native speakers distinction as being at all important. "NO" was the answer. As long as candidates could teach and had the required level of English, it didn't matter who they were and where they came from. Thus, a new form of discrimination--this time justified because it singled out the unqualified--liberated the lingusitically oppressed(受 压迫的). But the Cambridge project did more than just that: it confirmed that the needs of native and non-native teachers are extremely similar. 31、The selection of English teacher used to be mainly based on 32、What did non-native English teachers deserve but seldom enjoy? 33、 What kind of people can now find a job as an English teacher? 34、What is the result of the "new form of discrimination"( Line 5, para. 4 )? 35、The phrase "the lingusitically oppressed" (Line 7, Para. 4) refers to those who were ____________. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. For many women choosing whether to work or not to work outside their home is a luxury: they must work to survive. Others face a hard decision. Perhaps the easiest choice has to do with economists. One husband said, "Marge and I decided after careful consideration that for her to go back to work at this moment was an extravagance(奢侈) we couldn't afford," With two preschool children, it soon became clear in their figuring that with babysitters(临时照看小孩的人), transportation, and increased taxes, rather than having more money, they might actually end up with less. Economic factors are usually the first to be considered, but they are not the most important. The most important aspects of the decision have to do with the emotional needs of each member of the family. It is in this area that husbands and wives find themselves having to face many confusing and conflicting feelings. There are many women who find that homemaking is boring or who feel imprisoned(被禁) if they have to stay home with a young child or several children. On the other hand, there are women who think that homemaking gives them the deepest satisfaction. From my own experiences, I would like to suggest that sometimes the decision to go hack is made in too much haste. There are few decisions that I now regret more. I wasn't mature enough to see how much I could have gained at home. I regret my impatience to get on with my career. I wish I had allowed myself the luxury of watching the world through my little girl's eyes. 36、Which word in the first two paragraphs best explains why many women have to work? 37、Why did Marge and her husband think it an extravagance for Marge to go back to work? 38、What are the two major considerations in deciding whether women should go out to work? 39、Some women would rather do housework and take care of their children than pursue their career because they feel __________________. 40、If given a second chance, the writer would probably choose to ___________________. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. In Britain, the old Road Traffic Act restricted speeds to 2 m.p.h. (miles per hour) in towns and 4 m.p.h, in the country. Later parliament increased the speed limit to 14 m.p.h. But by 1903 the development of the car industry had made it necessary to raise the limit to 20 m.p.h. By 1930, however, the law was so widely ignored that speeding restrictions were done away with altogether. For five years motorists were free to drive at whatever speeds they liked. Then in 1935 the Road Traffic Act imposed a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in built-up areas, along with the introduction of driving tests and pedestrian crossings. Speeding is now the most common motoring offence in Britain. Offences for speeding fall into three classes: exceeding the limit on restricted road, exceeding on any road the limit for the vehicle you are driving, and exceeding the 70 m.p.h, limit on any road. A restricted road is one where the street lamps are 200 yards apart, or more. The main controversy (争论) surrounding speeding laws is the extent of their safety value. The Ministry of Transport maintains that speed limits reduce accidents. It claims that when the 30 m.p.h, limit was introduced in 1935 there was a fall of 15 percent in fatal accidents. Likewise, when the 40 m.p.h, speed limit was imposed on a number of roads in London in the late fifties, there was a 28 percent reduction in serious accidents. There were also fewer casualties (伤亡) in the year after the 70 m.p.h. motorway limit was imposed in 1966. In America, however, it is thought that the reduced accident figures are due rather to the increase in traffic density. This is why it has even been suggested that the present speed limits should be done away with completely, or that a guide should be given to inexperienced drivers and the speed limits made advisory, as is done in parts of the USA. 41、During which period could British motorists drive without speed limits? 42、What measures were adopted in 1935 in addition to the speeding restrictions? 43、Speeding is a motoring offense a driver commits when he 44、What is the opinion of British authorities concerning speeding laws? 45、What reason do Americans give for the reduction in traffic accidents? As researchers learn more about how children's intelligence develops, they are increasingly surprised by the power of parents. The power of the school has been replaced by the home. To begin with, all the factors which are part of intelligence--the child's understanding of language, learning patterns, curiosity--are established well before the child enters school begins, children's achievements have been far more influenced by parents than by teachers. This is particularly true about learning that is language-related. The second school rather than the home is given credit for variations in achievement in subjects such as science. In view of their power, it's sad to see many parents not making the most of their child's intelligence. Until recently parents had been warned by educators who asked them not to educate their children. Many teachers now realize that children cannot be educated only at school and parents are being asked to contribute both before and after the child enters school. parents have been particularly afraid to teach reading at home. Of course, children shouldn't be pushed to read by their parents, but educators have discovered that reading is best taught individually and the easiest place to do this is at home. Many four-and- five-year-olds who have been shown a few letters and taught their sounds will compose single words of their own with them even before they have been taught to read. 46、What have researchers found out about the influence of parents and the school on children's intelligence? 47、What do researchers conclude about children's learning patterns? 48、In which area may school play a more important role? 49、Why did many parents fail to make the most of their children's intelligence? 50、The author suggests in the last paragraph that parents should be encouraged to ______________. 由题干中的recent Olympic Games定位到第一段…in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood(近年来(奥运会在促进国际友谊方面的工作成效甚微),选项D恰恰 关于同志近三年现实表现材料材料类招标技术评分表图表与交易pdf视力表打印pdf用图表说话 pdf 达了这个意思, 故为正确答案。 2、C 推理题。由题干中的words of the manager of silver-medalist定位到第二段。 This wasn't volleyball and the International Volleyball Federation is finished, 3、A 推理题。 But in the present organization of the Olympic there is too much that encourages aggressive patriotism,当今的奥委会过分鼓励咄咄逼 人的爱国主义精神,这说明他们的工作还有待改进,和D选项 内容 财务内部控制制度的内容财务内部控制制度的内容人员招聘与配置的内容项目成本控制的内容消防安全演练内容 吻合。对于B选项,文章最后一段 指出might be too much to hope for,故可排除。 Passage Two 6、C 主旨题。 9、A 细节题。 强化训练二 Section A 11、[L] 12、[H] 13、[E] 14、[I] 15、[C] 16、[F] 17、 [K] 19、[B] 20、[D] [A] 18、 Section B Passage One 21、C 细节题。 该段开头提出the predictability of our mortality rates是长期困扰科学家的问题,量后一句指出It just happens that they follow a consistent pattern year after year(死亡人数年复一年保持稳定),故C为正确选项。 22、A 细节题。 He noticed that mortality rates for violent and accidental deaths throughout the Western world have remained oddly static throughout the whole of the century, despite all the technological advances and increases in safety standards that have happened in that time,(尽管技术在进步,安全 标准 excel标准偏差excel标准偏差函数exl标准差函数国标检验抽样标准表免费下载红头文件格式标准下载 在提高,但奇怪的是,西方世界的暴力和意外死亡率在整个世纪中都保持着恒定),由此判断,技术进步和安全标准的提高并未降低死亡人数(故A为正确答案。 23、A 细节题。 It appears, then, that we have an innate need for danger,符合A的意思。 选项B中的an optimistic personality and never losing heart 正是a sunny disposition的特征,所以是正确答案。 D后半部分developing a balanced level of risk不对。 Passage Two 26、D 细节题。从题干中的take form when“成形于…… 从第二段第二句中的collect vast amounts of data和第三句中的store 300 times more information than a decade ago可知,作者要通过这个例子说明数字技术有信息存储量大的优势,这正是选项C的内容。 该句中的over-shadowed与题干中的hindered意思相近(也就是说,是the struggles of high-tech industries对数字技术革 the struggles的目的是recover from the go-go years of the 命造成了负面影响。而 1990s(也就是下句中的a return to robust economic growth。 从第三段最后一句中的so可以看出,其前后两个分句是因果关系:stay tuned for good news的原因是,历经了二十年的数字技术革命 continue to bear fruit,该句中的digitally是指from the digital innovations。 stay tuned for… 简答题强化训练 (一) 31、whether or not one was a native speaker 32、The same situation as
