This reading passage is an autobiography of a volcanologist. He mainly talks
about three points in the article: his evaluation and description of the job, his Analysis of
first experience of volcano eruption and the reasons for his enthusiasm for the the job. From what he mentions, we can feel his excitement of being a
teaching volcanologist. More attention should be paid to students’ usage of important
phrases and sentence patterns in their expression of the job as an expert in material
typhoon.
According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus as well as my further
analysis of the teaching material and students’ learning ability, I summarize the
teaching objectives of this reading lesson as follows:
1) Knowledge objective: students are required to learn and use the important
words, phrases, and sentence patterns in this passage. Teaching 2) Ability objective: students are trained to use the key words, phrases and objectives sentence patterns to express their job as an expert in typhoon.
3) Learning strategy objective: students are encouraged to develop independent
thinking ability and co-operative learning ability.
4) Moral objective: This reading lesson enables students to have a deeper
understanding of being a volcanologist.
The teaching important and difficult points are: Teaching
1) how to assist students’ expression of being an expert in typhoon. difficult 2) how to help students master the important phrases and sentence patterns to
and contribute to their understanding of the excitement of being a volcanologist.
3) how to help students write down their own thoughts according to their life important
experience. points
In order to better achieve the teaching objectives, stress the important points and
break through the difficult points, I mainly employ the communicative teaching Teaching
approach and task-based teaching approach. The former calls for the methods
establishment of a real scene where authentic interaction occurs between the and aids
teacher and students; and the latter requires students’ effective carrying out of
the pre-designed tasks in the given time. Meanwhile, I make full use of the
modern electric equipment in my teaching such as multi-media and tape
recorder.
Students who attend my class are senior school students in Grade Two. Analysis of
According to my students’ mode of thinking, their concrete thinking mode still the plays a very important part in their learning. Therefore, in my teaching, tasks are
students designed step by step in the sequence of difficulty degree for them and students’
learning strategies are employed effectively to assist their internalization of the
important words, phrases and sentence patterns.

Having been in Hawaii for about two weeks, the author had the first experience of volcano eruption in his life. At first, how did he realize that there was an eruption? What were the signs?

Having realized that there was an eruption, the author hurriedly ran out of his house into the back garden where Mount Kilauea was in the distance. He had his first sight of eruption. Have you ever seen a volcano eruption? Let's first watch a short video.

Boiling rock erupted from a volcano and crashed back to earth.
The hot read lava was fountaining hundreds of meters into the air. Then it flew slowly like a wave down the mountain and buried everything in its path. As a consequence, many houses in the path of the lava were burned to the ground.
What did the author as well as other scientists do after the eruption? The order of activities
put on special clothes / drop to the crater / make their way to the edge / look down into the

The author stayed at the top and watched other scientists climb down into the crater to collect
some lava. From this point, we can feel that the author is an inexperienced scientist at that time. But now he is an experienced volcanologist. Having studied volcanoes for many years, the

He is impressed by the beauty of eruption as well as its potential to cause great destruction.
