英语读书报告 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a subsequent story of another story The Adventures of Tom Sawyer of Mark Twain. For more than a hundred years from the book was published, has been receiving applause. Even, book was estimated as “the best book” by Hemingway. Mark Twain was regarded as “the father of contemporary American literature” because of this book for its averagely accepted language and the spirit liberty it conveys. Huck was a white boy who was clever, brave as well as kindhearted. In order to live a free life and escape the cruel trade of his father, Huck ran away to the Mississippi River. During the way, Huck met Jim, who almost carried the same “mission”—in search of freedom, just like Huck. Jim was a diligent, honest, loyal black man. While no matter how hard he was working for his master, he never failed to be sold again and again. Each time he was sold, he would experience a more miserable life. In order to live a free life and control the fate of his own, he set foot on a way to escape. Same goal, same circumstances, Huck and Jim became good friends, and they helped each other and lived an easy and happy life on the Mississippi River. In order to help Jim to gain actual freedom, Huck had done a lot. Through thick and thin, they’ve known that the master of Jim had already released him in his testament. Huck was the main character of this story, while at the same time Jim could not be ignored because he played an important part in explaining the main theme of this story. This is novel that embodies the search for freedom. Mark Twain wrote this when there was an intense conflict between while people and black people. In this mind, he got a clear stand that racial discrimination should be prohibited. He “made it clear that Jim was good, deeply loving, human, and anxious for freedom.” In my opinion, without Jim this character, Huck himself alone cannot accomplish the task of searching for freedom. In the novel, although Jim was an honest and tolerant man, he could not avoid being sold and enslaved, which was s reflection of the majority black people during that period. Fortunately, the way Jim had chosen for his own life was good enough to be praised. Instead of grinning and bearing it, he adopted an option that was to escape. Given the society background, this was the best he could do. He was also a man enthusiastic to be sympathetic and to sacrifice. When they were floating on the Mississippi, he did his all best to take care of Huck, protecting him from being scared; when Tom was wound by butt, he remained in the place in danger to help Tom, without caring about his own safety. All that was described under Mark Twain’s pen showed that Jim was a shiny person in personality. Not only he was not worse than that white people, but he was even the model of them in most cases. From this perspective, we could figure out that his was a novel that built a high stature for the black people, which meant, there was a great need and urgency to abandon the slavery to give back freedom to everybody. Of course Huckleberry was the main character of the novel. Huck was famous in this novel, and he was representative treasonous child in the history of American literature. Huck was born a lively and active child, fond of free life. But he was deeply influenced by racial discrimination, thus he looked down upon Jim, made fun of him and even he would like to indict Jim. While as we all know, later Huck experienced an unbelievable life with Jim, and finally be identified with Jim and tried to help him to gain freedom. The novel had described the inner battle of Huck: at first he really wanted to indict where Jim was, but after several months’ interaction with Jim, he began to get rid of all the discrimination against Jim. To explain the inner battle of the character, Mark Twain used a lot of miner description to elipicit their contradiction. Here, Huck finally tore the letter and said: “just let me go to hell.” Just as a great writer analyzed here, this was a vivid and feel like fight between wholesome spirit and discrimination spirit, and discrimination finally failed. The frequent changes were ironically showed that the conception of racial discrimination could not even cheat a child for practically the child alone could differentiate who was good and who was bad. In this way, slavery was destined to be abandoned. Besides the spirit and the theme the novel it would like to convey, it also fully explains the artistic beauty of Mark twain’s work. First, the work makes a good combination of realism and romanticism. The legendary experience of Huck on the Mississippi and the miserable life in Huck’s real life and his encounter of the evil things all contribute a lot to the novel.
